I'n not able to find zip drives in italy, so i need an help to transfer all the files in the hd i have in the Quadra 650 in a macbook pro 2009! the Quadra that i have is a version without Cd drive, i bought an Applecd 300e but i'n not able to run it (the extentions apple cd there are, but i think it doesn't run because i haven't an scsi terminator....). Is possible to create cd's with it? The system i have installed is the T1-7.1. I think there is someone can help me! Max

So you could not make Ethernet work? As far as I know, the CD 300 series was read only. You will need a terminator, a CD Caddy and the driver disk for 7.1, I´m afraid. I am pretty sure to have all three. If you wish I could send it for postage fees. To have the Mac mount the device, a CD should stay inserted in the drive. However it will not help you to take any data off your old machine. For toasting media you´ll have to look for a old SCSI CD burner like those from Yamaha. I could probably sell mine, but I still want some money for it, as it is rare. You could send me your old Mac´s drive, if you wish. I can make an image of the drive and upload it to my mediafire place. I will send back the drive of course, but you would have to pay for the shipping.

If you have set up the PCMacLan server you can connect the Quadra with a crossover cable to it. You will of course need an adapter for Apple´s AAUI15 port to your RJ45 cable, like this one: http://www.linux-forum.de/apple-ethernet-tranceiver-aaui-15-10baset-m0437-2001865.html Make sure that your PC´s ethernet port is capable of using 10baseT, or auto sensing. Some gigabit ports don´t serve 10Mit clients very well.(or not at all) BTW, for PCMacLan, there is a pretty good manual coming with it. On the Quadra you select "Chooser" under the Apple. Select "PCMacLan demo" and type in the password you created for your "Quadra" account. Please be sure that the network name of your Quadra matches with the acount name created on PCMacLan. Afterwards you should see the PCMacLan network volume on your Quadra´s desktop, like any other Mac drive. After all, someone else might guide you through setting up a simple TCP/IP server on your OSX system. Maybe this would be an easier way to move some files. Info-Mac might be a place for such a question.

Thanks 24bit, so i cannot use a normal ethernet cable but i must use a cross cable? When i start PC MacLan i create a server called: "PC MacLan". So i create in "manage users and groups"---->"users manager"---->"users" an account whit the name of the mac "in my case "Quadra650". So i go to Apple --->chooser---->appleshare and i would find my mac, but i don't find it! It is so because i don't use a cross cable? Thanks for be so patient with me but i'n not so able with these macs even if i love them! Max

I forgot about your IMac G3, sorry. What about using that one as AppleTalk server for the Quadra? The server must provide a shared volume for the client, shouldn´t be a big thing for you.

I never used 10.4, so I am not the right person to tell you about it. As far as I know, all Macs from System7 to 10.4 could communicate via AppleTalk. The setup is different with some systems, but the idea remains the same. My G3 iMac 9.2 e.g. works with my 7100/80 7.5 without any problems I you network together some boxes, you would usually use a hub or switch to do so. All boxes would be connected to the hub with plain patch cables and the hub would care about the pins/polarities, so that every box would get the correct signal. There is only one exception. If you want to connect exactly two boxes, it can be done without a hub, by crossing over the signal lines, so that the two boxes would again get the right signal. So it is your choice: patch cable with hub or crossover cable without hub. There are of course coax or BNC networks too, but thats a different story. (Daisy chain with resistors at the ends) If you checked the wires, you can proceed with the software. On both machines the networking must be set to the same port: ethernet. Old Macs usually use a serial port by default. One Mac becomes the server, this one must have a shared volume or disk with the subdirectories shared and permission granted for the host. User name should be the name of your Mac client, password the clients password. If all is done right, the server should show up on the client, just as you pointed out.

I will try between os 7.1 e 10.4, and if i'm not able, try between os 7.1 and os 9.2... So i have to use the Quadra as server, and connect to him the iMac G3? So i buy a cross cable and connect the two Macs.... Thanks 24bit! there are many possibilities and i wish that is the right one!!! Max

It doesn´t matter which Mac you choose as server. The faster machine may be easier to handle. If you already have a ordinary patch cable you may also look for an adapter, like this one. http://www.reichelt.de/Patchkabel-cross-over/CROSS-X-ADAPTER/index.html?;ACTION=3;LA=444;GROUP=ECC42;GROUPID=4313;ARTICLE=74697;START=0;SORT=artnr;OFFSET=16;SID=10TiXheH8AAAIAADHteDAccc858ca09ac6eb57210d7843da6b689

I'm able to see my Quadra650 on the iMac if i connect them to my router! but i cannot access from the iMac because aft protocol problem... It means i need open transport on the Quadra? how can i create a readable floppy using transmac? i use it but when insert the floppy and try to open the installer tells me: (this is a translation from italian version of mac os T1-7.1, so in american version i don't know what is the real message...). The file i downloaded from the web is the 1.0.8 but i think it doesn't run on os T1-7.1. What version i need? Max

As far as I know, AppleTalk will not work through a router. If you have your Centris connected to the internet, why don´t you upload your files to a place like mediafire? Its free and you can upload 200MB chunks. Just make Stuffit archives of your files and store them online.

i don't have an internet browser on the Quadra650... and i'm not able to create a floppy to install the browser on the Quadra. I downloaded netscape but i'm not able with transmac to create the floppy, in fact quadra told me that it cannot find the application that created it. So? what can i do to have a floppy readable by the Quadra?
