I recently got this Powermac cheap and thanks to a helpfull member I also got a screen adaptor for it. I was trying to install 7.6.1 on it with the CD-ROM that came with my dads TAM. But about 1/3 in the installation proces the computer just freezes. Out of pure misery I'm installing 8,5 (and after that 8,6) on it. But I really whish for it to be an 7.6.1 system. What to do? I tried different hard drives, custom install etc... but it always locks up on the exact same spot.

Try booting from your 7.6.1 install CD again, and hold down Shift while booting so that it boots with Extensions Disabled. Then do the installation again, and don't select to install everything, only what you need. See this list for help:

Your disk may be damaged or something, so what we're doing here is trying to avoid any possibly damaged sectors.

Thansk for the quick reply!
Is there perhaps a way to reformat the drive other then the tools on the disc itself. They don't seem to be able to do it. This drive used to house MacOS9 and I think it might be wrongfully formatted

Disk Utility should absolutely be able to initialize your drive. You're going to have to repartition it from a Mac OS+ partition (Mac OS 8.1+) back to a Mac OS Standard partition (pre-Mac OS 8.1). Perhaps you're getting confused there.

Yes, non Apple drives could be weird with System7.
Do you how to get the disk utility patched, so that it will recognize all suitable drives?

I was easy to do, but I unfortunately forgot...

I am sure I have the patched one somewhere, but I am pretty sure it has a German user interface.
Should I look for it?

The original System software for your machine seems to be hosted at Macintoshgarden. Do you want to try that one too?

Ahem, I'm afraid I compressed the file with Stuffit7.
Will that be OK for you?

For your kind and helpfull replies. It seems I have a decent install right know.
I used the patched version and could format the fireball. But the damned thing still crashed :(. I was able to install 7,6 and when it started 7,6,1 it crashed. Then I booted it again from the cd and only installed 7,6,1.
It still crashed on startup but not with extensions of then I enabled all the extensions in groups of five. Now it just works with all extensions on.
Can you figure this out??? (I'm still running Norton now).

I am not a big fan of Norton Utilities. Cassady and Greene's Conflict Catcher is good easy to use software for tracking down problems with extension conflicts.

Cassady and Greene have been gone for sometime, but I imagine like everything else they can be searched for and found.

Well, if it is working now: DON`T touch it.

Norton Utilities might be useful for disk related problems, but it won't take care of queer extensions or so.
I recall an extension called "ARose", I don't know what it was good for, but it regularly stopped my 7100 from booting.
If you have it installed, remove it.

If I was in your place, I would certainly try the 7.5 CD for the 6100. Myself, I am still using that system, because it is small and fast. For more "modern" apps, I am running 9.04 on an external HD.

If 7.5 is working, you could set up a second partition on your Fireball with a newer OS.For maintaining or partitioning the Quantum, you might try "Hard Disk Toolkit" from FWB.

Best wishes!

My suggestion is just go find a suitable drive on Ebay for like $5 or $10, install Mac OS 7.6.1 without any loopholes or hacks and go from there.

Forget about 7.5.x... if you have a copy of 7.6.1 then use that. There's a reason one is freeware and one is not.

Yes, a suitable drive sounds like a very, very good idea.
Just keep in mind, that even the cheapest drives might offer 68 PIN ULTRA3 SCSI !
Your 6100's SCSI chip probably won't like those, and you will need an interface for converting 50pin Mac to 68pin SCSI-3 as well.
An old Barracuda 4XL ST32272N might serve you well, but I did not see anything cheap lately.
