Hello everyone, 3lectr1c here! I've been around and about other forums like 68kMLA and TinkerDifferent for a couple of years now, and figured it was about time that I joined up here as well. I'm just your average retro tech nerd, collecting and fixing up old crap from the 80s, 90s, and beyond. I mainly focus on laptops, and I especially love PowerBooks, though I've got plenty of PCs as well. I'm going to make it a rule here that I only check this place out and reply when I'm actually browsing through a vintage computer of some kind, as that's really the point of this place, which I quite like. Right now, I just registered and typed up this thread on my G4 Titanium PowerBook, running OS 9.2.2 and IE 5. Pretty neat to have a place that works on a browser this old, and so quickly too! See you folks around! |

The admins of this site take great pains to keep it as "retro compatible" as possible. So, welcome and you should always be able to enjoy top speed on s7t. ![]() Btw, there is more to System7Today: Hotline, FTP and then some. Just ask and you shall be answered.

And ask I will! Is the FTP part of the downloads section? I believe hotline is some chat thing - I don't know much about those, I usually prefer forums to the chat system. Just my preference. Yes, the site is quite compatible with old systems, it really is pretty special in that regard. I was however having some trouble - I first tried to reply here on my PowerBook 1400c, using Internet Explorer 3. Unfortunately it threw a javascript error when I hit the send button and it didn't actually push it through. Any idea why that might be? I'll try to get iCab on there later, but IE and Netscape 3 (tried both) ought to be good enough, especially when the site recommends Netscape 2 on the browsers page. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Sent from: PowerBook G3 PDQ, Mac OS 9.2.1, 192MB RAM, IE 5 - 3lectr1c

Hotline is a classic IRC system, only its communities are strictly server based. More about System7Today's setup can be found here. The FTP archive is hosted by the MacGarden, the two sites are losely related "at the top". And then there is FirstClass, a distinct separate chat & FTP project which I happen to be very fond off. Hope to see you there, soon.

I'll be sure to check it out if I ever decide to start using IRC - which I don't at the moment, but that could always change in the future. Thanks for the welcome, see you around. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Sent from: PowerBook G3 PDQ, Mac OS 9.2.1, 192MB RAM, IE 5 - 3lectr1c

Welcome 3lectr1c, great to have you join our friendly little community! As for your JavaScript error, go ahead and deactive CSS and JavaScript in your retro browser for speed gains and compatibility. Hotline is much more than just a chat. Actually, if you're on your retro gear, you should check out the Hotline Quicktime video on Cornica. Gives you a great idea about its history, "Mac'ness" and potential. And don't hold back and join the discussion :-)

Thanks for the welcoming messages everyone! I just tried disabling JavaScript on IE 3 on the PB 1400. Unfortunately, it still won't submit any forum replies. The errors from before no longer appear, but when I hit the send button, it just thinks for a few seconds, refreshes the page, and the reply doesn't appear. Any idea why this may be? Same issue with Netscape 3. Do I need to use a newer browser? Thanks. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Sent from: Modern PC (for shame! Form elements, as used by a forum for reply areas, are a tricky thing for many older browsers. Remember, when they were around, most of the websites were simply formated strings (text) delivered from the server (website) to your client (browser). There was no interactivity - took a few more years for guestbooks and such to become an integral part of the web :-) Anything holding you back from upgrading to Internet Explorer 4 (if you want to stick with IE?). I think I tried IE4 before and it worked. I'm still advocating for iCab 2.9.9 if your PB1400 has some RAM. Give it a try, it's cool. :-)

I'll load IE 4 on tonight - IE 3 is just what shipped with OS 8.1 so I figured I'd give it a go. My 1400 has the base 16MB RAM unfortunately so if that means iCab would be too slow, then so be it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sent from: Latitude E7470, Win11, 8GB RAM, FireFox - 3lectr1c

On low RAM memory situations, I have used a couple of finder quit methods to leave my browser running with more RAM, especially in System 7, which may help with your lower memory ceiling ![]() You could even throw-in a couple of smaller, low-memory apps open, which would work a little more like System 6's multi-finder until you quit all of your open programs to re-launch your Finder
