The amiga was an amazingly advanced machine in the day. I do remember been rather jealous of my friend having an a500. At the time i still had an 8-bit Sinclair ZX-spectrum 48k with cassette.

The Amiga especially in America wasn’t thought of anything more than a games machine. In uk and Europe i think we did but mac’s were for professionals and really had cornered the dtp/graphics arena with it gui, mouse, graphics tablets and the standard in software too.

The hardware of the Amiga was superior to anything far & wide at the time and would remain so for years to come.

But Commodore never made any serious investment in the operating system, which becomes obvious by comparing the A1000 Workbech to that of the A4000: They almost look identical.

Yes a real shame about commadore, they did some great things but like you say didn’t really take the gui seriously. The a1000-4000 were generally great machines, a bit misunderstood and for the amiga’s original advancements they cut corners i think due to budgets on those machines so they just weren’t taken seriously after that. The atari ST also a great machine although more for audio reproduction due to it’s midi. Those are still used in studios here and there even today.
You gotta give apple it’s due though, it was it’s operating system that made it succeed where 100s of computer companies of the 1980-1990s died. I did quite enjoy coding in basic. Making terrible games after an hour of coding from a magazine.
