Well of course :) WannaBe is by design made to be the most efficient word and link browser, tossing all the eye-candy out the window so you can focus on textual information. It can't be an information highway without a speedy vehicle to take you there ;)

My only issue with WannaBe is that I simply have no idea how to surf the web with it :o I know, it's awful lol, but once I figure it out, I'll be unstoppable in 68k!! :D

I like the idea of text-only browsing too but then why not use Gopher anyway? ;-)

What I really miss about WannaBe is the ability to handle form elements. You can't e.g. use the search on the Macintosh Garden. That and a few other things would make a great tool. (essentially a slightly "beefed-up" WannaBe while retaining the bare-bones approach)

Has it ever been open-sourced, I wonder?

I was thinking the same thing but from another angle: downsize a 68k browser so that it's bare-bones so that it functions more like WannaBe, I guess it could be called a 'lite', low-cal version of (an)other 68k web browser(s)!

I mean the ability to load images is a nice extra built into complete browsers :) I'm just thinking that it might be easier to remove things rather than add them: less programming involved since you're mainly deleting and patching any resulting glitches.

While WannaBe omits form fields directly, you can search using "plugins". Just select the one you want to search (eg., Google) and a prompt appears, allowing you to type. Slightly cumbersome, but works a treat. There's even a search plugin for the Garden, although I've always had trouble with it, so I just use the Google one!

Search plugins are the 3rd download on the WannaBe page:

The good news - I did some T&E on IV and both 4.x versions of ImageViewer in the Garden work in System 7 :)

1. version 4.42 requires at least System 7.1 and includes a serial
2. version 4.61 requires at least System 7.5.5 but is missing a serial

Besides application fixes and improvements, version 4.61 can save file lists as stand alone catalog files or generate html pages. PhotoShop import plug-in support has been enhanced to work with a greater number of plug-ins. QuickTime 3.0 support for video effects has been added.

The bad news - in the demo/unregistered mode, it mostly acts as a simple image and video viewer :( here is what a serial would enable:

1. Save, Copy or Move Commands
3. Move To Trash and Delete
4. Remove Resources
5. Batch
6. Print
7. Apply Order Index
8. Drag & Drop
9. Save List As HTML

So that's all I got for now, and since no copies or requirement documentation has surfaced for version 5.0.2, we have no clue whether that version works in System 7.

Edit: hold the presses! two mac garden members got working serials and I found a workaround using the previous version's serial: I simply registered version 4.42 then installed version 4.61 and it shows it's registered already :) vers 4.61 won't take the previous serial directly :o and the two serials for version 4.61 are name: ImageViewer, code: 1169 and name: registered, code: 4322 nicely provided by mrdav and skycapt! :D

So, essentially 4.6.1 is the one version to get for PPC Macs and 4.42 for for 68k - did I get that right? Is the 32 MB RAM requirement on the Garden page right? Seems a bit high, especially for 68k software?

Backing up the 8600 right now ...after that I'll download and give it a try myself.

Went ahead and created a page (not linked on the page though). Anything to correct / add ?

Almost :) now that not one but three working serials have been identified for version 4.61, that one is fine for both because it has the most features and is the last known version that works in Mac OS 7.6.

The serial for 4.42 can register 4.61 if you register version 4.42 first; that's the third working serial ;)
