Hey all, I installed Hotline Connect 1.2.3 which is an Evaluation Version. It's asking for an Unlock Code. I'm not able to find one... I even looked thru all the docs... maybe I missed it somewhere. Is it not available and I must enjoy the nag screen? I clicked on the "I Paid" box but the Evaluation Police weren't buying it.

Continuing on, I seemed to log in to hotline.system7today.com without a Login & Password - is that the correct way?

Inquiring minds and all that. 😎

First, the good news is it's fully functional without the registration and the nag screen doesn't have an annoying 10 seconds countdown or such. I actually used it unregistered on my IIci for like half a year and only recently got around to "register" it.

I know that there is no way to register that Hotline client but silly me still feels a bit uneasy posting serials on a public forum. Forgive me ;-)

The serials can actually be found fairly easily in a 'SerialBox'. If I were you, I'd just hop onto Hotline and check the various servers and their files sections ... :-)

Yes. There was a time when services did not require mandatory registrations to build a profile and collect your personal data, from OS used to mother's maiden name, and possibly sell these on. Hotline (HL) is just open - and that's pretty cool about it. You can retain fairly anonymous on HL (well, your IP gets recorded by the server) but if you choose, you may also get a user.

You haven't ever been on Hotline ?

Thanks for the reply Bolkonskij...😊

Okay, I'll poke around for a code.

I wasn't really worried about "security" using HS on the old MAC, I was just surprised that it didn't require any credentials to use.

BTW, never used Hotline 🙁, never even heard of it till registering here on S7T. My kid used to use ICQ, and I refused to use AIM. However, I used MS Messenger for years at work till MS killed it off.

Thanks for the tips!

I'm playing with cool Hotline clients like Panorama and Knezzen's new HL client, and they're all pretty slick! 8)

Trying to combine all possible OSes, I'm thinking about setting-up a Hotline server on a new Mac to use on my LAN as well as a WebDAV server. Here's why: don't Hotline and WebDAV servers both preserve Mac files' resource forks? I mean, if they do, that'd be a fantastic way to transmit installers, self-mounting disc images and archives, right?

If both servers could be setup on the same directory, I could use Goliath, Hotline clients and potentially even an HTTP file and if AppleShare's an option, even networked drives. Obviously a networked drive would be the best option, but in lieu of that, it's good to know that there's more than one way to skin this file-sharing cat! ;)

Yes, Hotline preserves the resource fork. No need for StuffIt. It makes indeed a great service for sharing files.

Awesome!:D

I'd used to drop stuff on shared drives like data snips for text, images and url clips (and possibly even audio clips?), and as far as I'm aware, all of those clips were still shareable with OS X was well!

I loved the fact that they were all self-opening, so I could leave myself quick notes describing items in a folder along with those items and could drag and drop them into whatever program I wanted to use them in; the ultimate in system file independence ;)

Now if these system clips are then packaged within a self-extraction image, in the event they're downloaded via a non-resource-preserving protocol, I think such images can still be opened by the usual disk-mounting programs as a failsafe and still be easy to mount and use :)

This is really sweet! I gave it a try on my Mac mini G4, using Pitbull Pro 2.4.4, Panorama 1.1.1 and Hotline Client 1.8.1 and 1.9. Works great!

The only issue I had is that the files were always broken whenever I tried downloading them. Not sure what is the issue? Pitbull Pro sometimes prevented the download altogether.

One other thing I wondered about was "registering" a user. I hear using Panorama's TIDE feature even encrypts the data. Nonetheless, I was unable to register / save / create a new user. I could login to the server and chat with a "discardable" nickname, though.

Anyway, I love this! Any plans to mimick this effort with KDX, as well? :)

Jatoba!! :D Welcome back, buddy

And yes, absolutely where I was heading with this! (as far as trying KDX due to it's extended features) but I may have to leave Mac OS media and text clips in the realm of actual shared folders; worth a shot to try anyway :) It's just cool that the Mac OS have so many amazing toys!

KDX is cool, but it's a Mac OS 8.6 and PowerPC only type of protocol. Feels harsh to leave all the fellow 68k users behind. It doesn't really add anything cool to the table in terms of features IIRC?

Hey @cballero! Sorry about my "disappearance". Thanks for welcoming me back. :)

@Knezzen I see, I figured it probably had such strict requirements. Perhaps... one day HotStuff could be integrated to optionally work over the KDX protocol? ;)

Actually, is there ANY source code available of ANY implementation of the protocol, like there was for Hotline? And if not, any docs somewhere that describe how it is supposed to work or be implemented?

That's an excellent question, Jatoba! :D

If there's any way to make KDX work backwards toward 68k, now that would be something! (To Knezzen's valid point, if nothing else, it would deliver yet another cool tool to the 68k table) 8)

I only found these links so far, but it might be a start! :)

of course, it's modern > https://www.erb.pw/projects/hotline-kdx
http://web.archive.org/web/20090701002541id_/http://www.haxial.com/

I looked a few more spots, but KDX source code may be hiding here or there, as usual ;) it'd be real nice to locate it if available though!

Added my own client (HotStuff) to the list as well ;)

The Hotline server is still up and running and more active than ever. Come join the fun :)
