Well now I realize I didn't read enough of this site... lol. My 7.6.1 install has some unnecessary stuff on it so I'll fine tune that, and I'll go ahead and install MacsBug and Extension Overload. As for the issues I had they were lockups and type 3 errors whenever I opened applications like iCab. |

Start your Mac with extensions off to begin the troubleshooting process to see if you still have issues. Then load extensions until you can replicate the issue. This could point to extension conflicts. I know that faulty RAM can also cause problems, and possibly a dead PRAM battery can cause similar issues. Zapping the PRAM with a specific keyboard shortcut can help with issues as well. Rebuilding the desktop can also help fix certain issues, and depending on the hard drive, often defragmenting the hard drive can also fix additional issues, different defraggers have different pros and cons.. oops, just noticed I duplicated some fixes already provided!

Hi Kat, A warm welcome to you! May I advise to set up a rescue/maintenance partition /w a bare min. of extensions? That way you never get locked out of your own box and you have a clean, working systen for comparison.

Brilliant suggestion, 68040! Speaking from experience, huh?  Having a small system partition is an excellent practice indeed, which is often overlooked as a valid first aid option! I believe that once I even duplicated a rescue CD with various system utilities as a boot up disk for that same reason, akin to what macOS and other OSes do these days.

Kat mentioned Speed Doubler...what's the consensus on that? Being a bit of a hack at the system level, that could definitely cause stability issues...is it worth the trouble? The better caching and Finder copy (esp. for 7.x) sound great, but does the improved m68k emulator make a difference on "newer" machines? I know it is definitely better than the one in rom on the x100 series, but I also know Apple improved it quite a bit on the 2nd (and up) generation of ppc's. ---- Also I was reading in the devnotes (and elsewhere) that SOME Alchemy motherboards support EDO ram dimms, among other things. Since you mentioned you had some doubts about your ram, that's probably the first thing I'd look at. Take out all the larger ones and put in only as few and small as you can stand and see if the system is suddenly more stable.

would it be possible to have my username changed to "alectrona6400"? i had a lapse in my judgement about a few months ago when i came up with the one im using right now and the reason for the change may be rather obvious for anyone whos used social media :/

How good I'm not using Social Media for years now, so I'm not recognizing it. But then all this "silent signaling" is so blown out of proportion anyway ... Yes, I'll looking into changing your username next time I head to the admin panel. :-)

thank you so much. yeah its rather complicated and the reason for the change is mainly out of paranoia... already had to do it elsewhere on other platforms. i only had '2988' in my username because i saw 29:88 on a malfunctioning alarm clock i used to have a long time ago, not because of boogie2988 who i literally knew nothing about until very recently. lol... i chose 6400 because well, power macintosh 6400. one of my favorite old world macs honestly.

Well that is about the geekiest deep dive into four numbers I have seen. I feel you should be rewarded with some geeky badge of honor beside your user name, but I can not think of anything.  I did upon seeing it might be associated with controversy check out rfc 2988.

wow... thats interesting. thanks for changing my username by the way. anyways, i've been doing fine, haven't touched my powermac 6400 in a bit but i think i found the issue... the farallon PN993 drivers are unstable, so every time it connects to the internet it will have issues. will try an RTL8169 card in a moment
