I'm Katheryn, alias is "alectrona2988" (you can call me Kat) I'm a 19yo transfem girl who likes messing with technology, especially older technology. I've known about S7T for a while and only now have I managed to make a nice System 7 (specifically Mac OS 7.6.1) configuration. I am sending this from a Power Macintosh 6400/180 in fact, which I've done many upgrades to so I can have a kick-ass S7 computer. I'll make a thread about this later because it deserves its own section because of how fun this was to put together. Pleased to meet you all! Long live the classic Mac OS! |

Nice to meet you Kat Welcome to S7T! I'm glad you got to set up an actual System 7 Mac. I would like to hear more about your project. It's nice to have you here.

Welcome to S7T! That 6400 is a mighty nice machine, always had my eyes out for one. (but got a 7500/100 instead locally, which I love much as well!) Tell us a bit more about what you do with it if you want. What do you plan on using it for? Something specific like writing or programming ?

Welcome to our small but friendly community, Kat! Just like Bolkonskij I'm curious to hear what you plan on using your old machine for

Welcome and wow! I have to ask, how'd you come across such a treasure? I too had that PowerMac model and was among my favorites! As you already know, our enthusiasm for early Macs is great, well, because they are great and they helped to reshape the landscape of personal computing! ![]() And even though System 7.5.5 has been hailed as the best System 7 by some, I still feel Mac OS 7.6.1 rocks the most!

Welcome Kat, I like a lot am interested in your machine. The PowerMac 6400 was also sold as the Performa 6400, making it the only Performa branded machine with a mini tower form factor. Outside of the branding I do not what difference there were (if any) between the PowerMac 6400 and the Performa 6400. I would guess though that it makes a very ideal System 7.6 machine.

Thanks for welcoming me with open arms! To answer a few questions, I found this machine on eBay for $100 shipped. Yes, it's quite steep compared to what one would've paid like, 15 years ago? but my luck locally has NEVER been good! I was going to write more about this but then the system froze up on me and I was exhausted from working on it. Turns out I had flashed the ATI card with an overclocked BIOS that I had no idea caused issues on my particular card (183/166, 166/166 is stable though). As for some of the parts, I already had them on hand; the G3 card was from a 6360 that I inherited a while back from a distant friend of mine, though the PSU died and I already wasn't a huge fan of the fact it only had one available PCI slot. The optical drive in here right now is a CR-508-B SCSI 24x CD-ROM, though it is very dicey so once I save up some more money I'll invest in a Toshiba SD-M1401. As for the differences between the Performa and Power Macintosh names, there are none in terms of hardware, but they bundled a LOT of software on the performas. As for System 7.6.1, you'll need to disable Virtual Memory on it in order to have it run smoothly on the 6360/6400 and 5400; there is a bug related to that and the IDE bus causing a horrible slowdown. The ethernet card in here is a Farallon PN993 10/100 PCI card. I'll get into even more detail in another post.

Howdy! And welcome! I know you said $100 was a bit much, but to me that's a total bargin! I'd take that in a sec. Love that form factor with the nice speaker too...wish I had one! I've got a 6360 which is a very similar (same?) motherboard, but of course less slots and NO extra drive bays . But I always say the 6360 is the stealth model in the 6300 form factor in that it's the only one with PCI and not a mutant 68k board like the others...the only 6300 that's any good.

The PowerMac 6500 and the 6360 both used mother boards based on the Alchemy architecture.

Hmm...I've been lax in my classic research knowledge...I hadn't heard of the 6500 until just now! I always thought that was the case with the motherboards...makes me a little less jealous of all you lucky dogs with your insta-towers! At least mine has the same guts/power, even if it looks like a poopy 6200/6300. Looks like that motherboard was in the 5400 too. The wikipedia page for the 6500 says it uses a different graphics processor than the 6400...hmm... I couldn't easily find the tech/dev notes for the 6360, or 6400, but the wikipedia pages link to these...my guess is the 5400/6360/6400 were all the same, so have the same crappy Valkerie video chip as the 5200/6200/6300, whereas the 5500/6500 had a low end ATI...shame! Well Kat's Radeon solved that! https://cdn.preterhuman.net/texts/computing/apple_hardware_devnotes/PowerMac%205200-6200.pdf https://cdn.preterhuman.net/texts/computing/apple_hardware_devnotes/PowerMac%205400.pdf https://cdn.preterhuman.net/texts/computing/apple_hardware_devnotes/PowerMac%205500-6500.pdf

Sorry I miss spoke the 6400 and the 6360 used the Alchemy architecture. The PowerMac 6500 used the Gazelle architecture.

6360 and 6400 use the same (or similar) motherboard. 6500 is very different in that regard. Also could anyone give me advice for getting 7.6.1 to run better on a 6400 aside from having speed doubler and disabling VM? I'm having some stability issues.

Quote from: alectrona2988 I'm having some stability issues. What kind of issues are you having exactly? I've got too the same but due to extension conflicts, also mixing different language components (my System 7 locale is in italian). You could try to enter in Extension Manager and select a complete base System 7.6.1 set. After rebooting and verified you don't have any of these issues, add another extension and reboot, then verify again and so on... It is a bit long procedure but you should identify which component make your System unstable. You could also order extensions list by package name (this helped me a lot).
