1 Software / Re: H.264 or MP4 video in os 7-9

Quote from: "zchary"
I have been using system 7 and OS 9.0 for about 10 years, and the only setback was not being able to play h.264 or mp4 video on os 9, is there some mac os 9 plugin that i can use with quicktime 5. Thanks

Good luck with h.264 under OS 9.  I tried to find something that would play that video for my os 9.x machine and finally gave up.  I doubt that anything is powerful enough to play that decoder except with some kind of hardware acceleration anyways. In fact, the ONLY way that I can play full screen High Def (720p) h.264 video on my 1.67 Ghz PowerBook G4 is to use "Mplayer OS X Extended" and tweak the settings. Trust me on this, I have spent a LOT of time trying to figure out another way to do this and Mplayer is the ONLY option that works smoothly.  Quicktime just sucks and is like chop, chop, chop on a G4.

BUT, if you do happen to find a way to play this type of video, please share it here!!!!

Whoops!  Looks like my question has already been answered here...

I guess there IS a system 7.6.1 dvd movie solution already out there!  I still wonder if my method would also work...someday when i get an os 7.6 machine up and running I'll try it!

3 Hardware / DVD playback with System 7.6
February 09, 2008, 07:07
Hello everyone!

I have been trying to figure out a way to playback dvd movies using system 7.6.  I have a "Wired4dvd" pci card that will work under os 8.0 (according to the manual).  I think that the only thing that Os 8.0 added was udf drive access, but this can be added to O.S. 7.6 using the free "udf access" extension that was released by adaptec.  So, I was wondering if using the wired card, dvd player software, and udf extension would this allow dvd playback in 7.6?  Has anyone tried this? i would try it myself, but i don't have a machine at the moment that will boot 7.6.

Thanks!

I don't know if this has been covered here before, but anyone who is interested in a very powerful audio editing suite for their system 7 machine should go here...

Select "download" in the far right menu, and then "freebies" in the sub menu. On the next screen, select "SONIXwork Powerbundle"

6 Development / Free Basic Programming Language for Macs
November 26, 2007, 06:00
Hello everyone!

Coming from a Commodore 64 programming background, I have always missed the simplicity (at least to me) of programming with an interpreted version of BASIC and have been looking for one for my Macs.  Well, I ran across a really nice freeware BASIC that seems to me to be exactly what I was looking for here...

http://www.nicholson.com/rhn/basic/

The program is called "Chipmunk BASIC" and it is really fun for old timers like myself who grew up on this kind of stuff.

Anyways, there is a copy of the language there that runs on older macs, including OS 7.6 machines so I just wanted to throw this out in case there are any other old 8-bit users here.

Have fun!!!

What kind of 3-d graphics?  Wireframe, raytraced?  Can "Corel Graphics 8" or "Illustrator" do what you need (available on this site)?  Also, you might try the FREE program "Patchdance" available here...

12 Hardware / Wireless WEP and Airport Extreme N
October 07, 2007, 04:01
I'm not sure what the problem is, but get this...My newer 1Ghz G4 iMac airport utility will NOT connect to my Airport express to allow me to change any of the settings, but my old 466Mhz G3 iBook will connect to the Airport Express?!?!

What the hell?  I have to break out my older, slower system to access the Express while my newer system gives me an error whenever I try and connect.

However, since the Belkin wireless router is accessed using a web browser, no problem!

Computers...gotta love em.

Thats interesting that you had problems with 3rd party routers.  I had the opposite  experience.  I purchased an Airport Express and had (have) a ton of trouble getting the stupid thing working properly, but I purchased a Belkin wireless router and it worked flawlessly out of the box, with hardly any setup required.

Glad the airport worked for you though!!

Congratulations on your progress Dan, I love this site!

Wouldn't it be cool if it was possible to get an original firewire iPod working under System 7.6 somehow...
