Operating System / HFS using swap partition?
May 22, 2008, 00:57 |
I've had Macs in the past with very little RAM. I still partition my <OS X Mac drives to include a partition of 2-3x the RAM and name it MacSwap. I direct the Memory control panel to use it, usually to double the amount of my RAM. It's very stable and not slow, and the memory pages don't get written into the midst of my system or data files. (While I'm at it I'll carve out two 1-Gig partitions for Photoshop swap, too.) |

Software / Re: Change file type association

Quote from: "wove" A final after thought here. An Application such as FileBuddy could also be used to batch change the file's creator codes, so that files now having the QT creator code, could be changed to have the SoundJam code Greg's Browser, which I can't do without, will let you change creator codes. Also it will let you trash files with command-delete and empty the trash with command-T. It runs on systems as old as 7.1. It is shareware. |

Hardware / Legally acquiring System Enabler 411?
August 07, 2007, 14:11 |
Quote from: "dpaanlka" I might be mistaken but I vaguely recall 6400 and/or 6500 machines not being compatible with 7.6 - they needed to jump up to 7.6.1. This would be a problem booting and installing from a 7.6 CD as opposed to a later 7.6.1 CD. You can make a boot diskette that will access CD drives by adding the Apple CD extension to a regular boot diskette (Here's Gamba's page for them). If you need to cut space, replace the Finder on the diskette with a mini-finder (also available on the above page). Boot the 6500 with the boot diskette, insert and access the Apple CD; then you can format if necessary and install from the CD to the hard drive of the 6500. |

Slightly OT: One thing I do for Virtual Memory is create another partition from my hard drive (I name it "MacSwap") to write VM to (per the Memory Control Panel). It's very stable, since the computer isn't paging out to the startup drive that contains my system and data, and it's a little faster than regular VM for the same reason. It will reliably double my memory (and with a maxed-out computer or expensive archaic memory, that can be a good thing). |

Feedback & Ideas / Screenshot gallery
August 06, 2007, 14:11 |
What about a user-submitted screenshot gallery? It could even be hosted on flickr if space was an issue. Or, better yet, on a site like Webshots, which is a little less like the Casbah. Both those sites look OK without CSS or scripting (for using iCab =) |

Operating System / HFS+ in Mac OS 7.6.1

They'll unmount when you shutdown, but everything will stay in them. When you reboot, if they (or aliases) are in the Startup Items folder, they'll mount automatically. Otherwise, double-click them when you want to mount them. |=|--o /Peter HUMMERS/ |

News & Announcements / Important Notice - Input Appreciated

Quote from: "dpaanlka" No, instead I think I would like to make the new Info-Mac a new, thoroughly modern online community for Macintosh users. It would focus more on current and recent Macs running Mac OS X, and have a broader audience appeal for that reason. I believe the Info-Mac name and legacy, combined with a completely new and modern online community, will have quite a potential for success. I'm afraid you've lost me here ... I don't like X (I use it at work); at home, for a modern computer I use Linux-PPC and for fun, 7.6 (on a PB5300). But mainly, and I see this elsewhere, as the X stuff takes more and more space (and it will, quickly), where will the older stuff go? Of course I know you can only go so far with 7.6, which will reduce the dynamism of the site, but I'd like to see, first and foremost, a restoration of the Info-Mac archives, with submissions from those of us with old software lying around (respecting licenses), as not everything is on there (although sometimes it seems as if it is). |
