Slightly OT: One thing I do for Virtual Memory is create another partition from my hard drive (I name it "MacSwap") to write VM to (per the Memory Control Panel). It's very stable, since the computer isn't paging out to the startup drive that contains my system and data, and it's a little faster than regular VM for the same reason. It will reliably double my memory (and with a maxed-out computer or expensive archaic memory, that can be a good thing). |

Someone mentioned a driver for boot use.. or a lack of driver... the driver is installed when the CF card is initialized, just like it is if you initialize a new HD.. Some things to keep in mind when using CF cards: There are different speed ratings for the cards.. 2X, 4X and so on.. pick the fastest cards you can get your hands on if you want to use it as a boot drive.. If you cheap out, you'll get exactly what you pay for. The cheap ones you'll find on ebay are slower than the HD that came in the 1400 way back when.. The eariler comments about the read / write cycle and lifetime are true.. but the higher speed cards usually have a longer life cycle.. again, you get what you pay for. Compared to the power requirments of a HD, a CF card should greatly increase your battery life.. On one of my 1400's, the battery life doubled.. from almost two hours to a bit over four hours.. that's without having a HD installed.. I'm not sure if there is a limit on CF card size in a 1400 under System 7.. a one gig card works just fine under 7.6.. maybe someone else has used something larger and can comment further.. CF / PCMCIA readers are available in the camera section at Best Buy, and should be available at any camera shop.. if it costs more than $15.00 from a retailer, you're paying too much.. you should be able to track one down on ebay for a few bucks less, shipping included. In all honesty, if you can come up with a decent 10+ gig HD and max out your RAM (64mb), you'll get much better performance, and a slight increase in battery life (newer drives are a lot faster, and more energy efficient) Best of luck with your project!

When you install the Mac OS onto a CF card, it treats it just like any other hard disk drive, and installs hard disk controllers onto it. This may have slight adverse effects, as the computer is treating the CF card like a hard disk, but most likely is just fine.
