Thanks for the info.

If I can get hold of one of those security screwdrivers, I might bother, but it's a minor annoyance as there's not much reason to remove the only battery.

I can make spanned zip archives on the PC - can stuffit unzip these? Do I go via Transmac, or can it read them if they are dragged over the icon?

Oh, and what are my chances with a wireles card?

Anyone?

Still surfing the rest of the net for answers which i shall post if I find any.

Thanks again,

-Oldie

Sorry, a couple of other points:

The catch on the lid is broken and it appears that it would engage a switch - presumably this just puts the machine to sleep.

Also, time and date information is not retained - I imagine I would have to open the machine and replace a battery on the main board. Is this correct?

Thanks again. - Oldie
3 Hardware / Powerbook 520
June 10, 2007, 18:48
Hello all,

I found an old 520 Powerbook in the attic. I have a desktop PC and am going away for a month and thought that it might be handy to have a laptop - but I don't need one enough to actually spend any money ;-)

I ran the battery reconditioning software and can now get 1-2 hours of life from it - and anyway could use mains power most of the time.

All I really need is text editing, but internet access would be good. If it were possible to get wi-fi that would be fantastic, but I may be kidding myself on that score!

If anyone can answer these questions, I'd be grateful:

1. I have installed Stuffit expander 4.01 on the 520 and Transmac on my PC, But how do I transfer .sit files larger than a 1.44Mb floppy (e.g. iCab)? What can create a spanned archive or is there some way to connect directly to the PC?

2. There appears to be an expansion slot in the left hand battery slot. Could I put a wireless card here, or do I need to plug something into the ports on the back? Obviously drivers may be a problem.

3. It's currently running OS B1-7.1.1 and has 8Mb of RAM. I've downloaded the images for OS 7.5, then found there was already a copy on the HD. As there's currently no valuable data on it, is it worth upgrading and can I do it from the HD or should I just put the images onto floppies and do it that way?

Feel free to treat me like an idiot - two of my areas of ignorance are: Laptops and Macs

Thanks in advance for any help.
4 Hardware / Anyone rebuild a battery for PB500 series
June 10, 2007, 18:24
I've run the update software a few times now and every time it tells me the battery can't be updated. However, The battery now works and lasts for 1-2 hours! I'm now getting ideas about what I could get this old machine to do. There appears to be a card slot in the left hand battery compartment. I wonder if Wi-fi is possible...

Thanks for the information dpaanlka.

I tried deleting the .bin extension and later the .sea extension, but neither affected PC exchange and not knowing what the file actually was meant I didn't know what program to associate with it - one drawback of no file type suffixes!

I downloaded and installed a program called 'Transmac' from here: http://www.asy.com/sharetm.htm (free use for 30 days)
This copied and translated the downloaded file to a Mac formatted floppy which then worked!

.sea stands for Self Extracting Archive. The archive extracted itself and I transferred the extension to the extensions folder in the system folder.

I'm now attempting to recondition the battery. The first attempt was a no go, the second worked after I ejected and reinserted the battery. The program tells me that the battery can't be reconditioned, but it now displays a battery level and appears to be charging it.

I pulled the plug and the battery time remaining read 2.30 - but I guess that was 2.5 minutes, because that's how long it lasted! But it does run on the battery now and perhaps a longer period of charging will increase the life.

Thanks for your help.
6 Hardware / Found PC exchange, but how to use it?
June 08, 2007, 22:17
Hello again,

I've found PC exchange, but it only seems to be set up to send .txt files to Simple Text.

Which application should I select to handle the battery updater? Or what is the suffix for a program on the MAC? (Already tried .exe. of course!)

Thanks

Hello,

I found a 520 powerbook in the attic and it seems to work OK, but the battery is dead. I've read about and downloaded the battery updater, but (probably because I'm transferring from a PC) it doesn't work. It asks for a 'PC Exchange' program to open the .bin file.

I know nothin about MACS does anyone have any tips as I have also downloaded the images for the OS 7.5.5.

Thanks!
