my latest aquisition (or as we MLAers like to call them: Liberations), is a Powerbook 540c. It's a nice little machine, with a nice surprise: FULL 36mb ram!! AND, I have an someone who wants to give me a FULL 68040 from a 550c for FREE!! it's an awsome little machine, sans the broken power adapter, which still works (case chipped apart), but it powers the machine fine wrapped in duct tape. it came with flat 7.5 (I have a set of flat 7.5 somewhere, I should image it, as that seems rare. only seen 7.5.3 on apple's site.) I then proceded to install 7.1.1, off a set of 520/540c restore floppies I have. I can image those too, if anyone is interested. right now, i'm updating it to 8.1 right now, see how fast that is (and it is), but installation is dead slow over localtalk, connected to my wallstreet running 9.0.4. I've been thinking about dual booting 8.1 and 7.6.1, just for fun, but it's only got a 320 or so mb hard drive. how much space does 7.6.1 take up? because it's sitting on 75mb right now with 8.0 (before I updated). perhaps I should just run 7.6.1. whadaya think? -digital

Awesome, enjoy the machine. I have 2 (one with a 603e upgrade). I have had very good performance out of 7.5.5. Still trying to locate a copy of 7.6. Haven't tried OS8 yet though. I've do remember reading a posting at lowendmac that 8 was slower on the blackbird's so I've pretty much stuck with 7.

it's running 8.1 now, and it's pretty speedy. of couse, that's with the full 36mb ram. i'll stick with now, and maybe later downgrade to 7.6.1. -digital

7.6.1 is faster than 8.1 and will also help squeeze the most out of that tiny hard drive.

I just got everything installed too. less than 15mb free on the hard drive. OS 8 really has some things I like, like the spring loaded folders, contextual menus, and the folders you can place at the bottom of the screen. I would like some extra speed. it takes about 2 minutes to boot. with the stock 7.1.1 installed, it was a rocket in less than 20 seconds. I may go back to 7.6.1 soon. i'll connect my 180 to the 540c and install across localtalk, since there is a full set of boot floppies on the 180. also, I can not seem to use the modem, as I don't have the global village software for it. does anyone know where I can get a full set? GV's site only lists an updater, and that won't work. it seems like a rare piece of software, but it's kinda required. -digital

Try going to the help center and installing both the "Geoport" and "Telecom" drivers found under the "Apple" section. I don't know if they'll work under 7.1.x.

Hello all, I found an old 520 Powerbook in the attic. I have a desktop PC and am going away for a month and thought that it might be handy to have a laptop - but I don't need one enough to actually spend any money ;-) I ran the battery reconditioning software and can now get 1-2 hours of life from it - and anyway could use mains power most of the time. All I really need is text editing, but internet access would be good. If it were possible to get wi-fi that would be fantastic, but I may be kidding myself on that score! If anyone can answer these questions, I'd be grateful: 1. I have installed Stuffit expander 4.01 on the 520 and Transmac on my PC, But how do I transfer .sit files larger than a 1.44Mb floppy (e.g. iCab)? What can create a spanned archive or is there some way to connect directly to the PC? 2. There appears to be an expansion slot in the left hand battery slot. Could I put a wireless card here, or do I need to plug something into the ports on the back? Obviously drivers may be a problem. 3. It's currently running OS B1-7.1.1 and has 8Mb of RAM. I've downloaded the images for OS 7.5, then found there was already a copy on the HD. As there's currently no valuable data on it, is it worth upgrading and can I do it from the HD or should I just put the images onto floppies and do it that way? Feel free to treat me like an idiot - two of my areas of ignorance are: Laptops and Macs Thanks in advance for any help.

Sorry, a couple of other points: The catch on the lid is broken and it appears that it would engage a switch - presumably this just puts the machine to sleep. Also, time and date information is not retained - I imagine I would have to open the machine and replace a battery on the main board. Is this correct? Thanks again. - Oldie

Quote from: "Old 520" The catch on the lid is broken and it appears that it would engage a switch - presumably this just puts the machine to sleep. You are correct on both accounts. The latch on the lid engages a switch which puts a PowerBook to sleep when the lid is closed. A PowerBook with a broken latch will generally not automatically sleep when the lid is closed. Just like desktop machines Powerbooks have a battery on the motherboard which maintains several settings including date and time. When the backup battery is dead removing the power will cause those settings to be lost. bill

Thanks for the info. If I can get hold of one of those security screwdrivers, I might bother, but it's a minor annoyance as there's not much reason to remove the only battery. I can make spanned zip archives on the PC - can stuffit unzip these? Do I go via Transmac, or can it read them if they are dragged over the icon? Oh, and what are my chances with a wireles card? Anyone? Still surfing the rest of the net for answers which i shall post if I find any. Thanks again, -Oldie

The WavLan drives at least older versions support 68k machines. The require OpenTransport and OS 7.6. So wireless networking is possible on your machine. I assume you have a PCMCIA card cage since you are looking at Wireless cards. If you do, you can get a PCMCIA memory card reader. You can then write files to the card (up to the size of the card) using a USB card reader on the PC then read those files from the PCMCIA card reader in the PB. Older and not free versions of Stuffit included the ability to create segmented archives of large files. This enables you to break large files into floppy size chunks which can then be reassembled on the HD or the other machine. I have no current source for this software. bill
