Operating System / Sharing files between WinXP and System 7
June 14, 2009, 03:28 |
Thanks for all the help everyone. I forgot Cyberdog has built in FTP, as when I typed "FTP" in cyberdog and when the topic was submitted, it showed it as a link!! Pretty slick. Also, Windows 95 is loaded on the DOS side of the machine, in a 500mb hard drive file. Ideally, it would have both a C and D with the max 1013mb, but I only have a 2gb HD. Oh, and the windows side does not seem to be picking up the on board ethernet hardware, even during a non plug and pray scan. I don't know if apple ever wrote windows drivers for that or not, but I know until I installed the PC software 1.6.4 (I was running 1.0.3 off the floppies I found in the accessory box), I did not have use of the CD-ROM in windows. Still can't boot of the CD-ROM, but at least I can make a custom MS-DOS boot floppy with the Apple drivers so I can boot a CD from DOS. So, it looks like FTP is my best option. However, I like DAVE the best, as I have had the most experience with it. Please, check the system requirements for Dave 2, Lichen Software. I would appreciate it. |

Operating System / Sharing files between WinXP and System 7
June 13, 2009, 05:45 |
Hi all. I was given a Power Macintosh 6100/66. Fantastic machine. 72mb of RAM, 2gb HD, dead 2xCD-Rom, but I popped in a 12x apple drive. I also popped in a DOS card for it, making it a windows box as well. It is connected to a windows laptop, which is sharing it's wireless connection so I can access the internet on it. In fact, I am writing this on it right now, under glorious System 7.6.1 and Cyberdog 2.0. I can't get it to send files I downloaded on the 6100 to the XP machine, or pull things off the XP machine. I know Appleshare was in Windows prior to XP, but stupid M$ took it out for no reason. I think I have 3 options here: 1. FInd a SMB/Windows sharing client that runs on System 7. 2. Find a Appleshare server for Windows XP. 3. Skip either of the above, and set up FTP. This would require getting client software for system 7. IIRC, XP already has a built in server. In all cases, the software would have to be free, and low memory users. I tried dave for number 1, but at least 3.0 requires CarbonLib, which = Mac OS 8.1 or later. any solutions? Thanks. |

Hardware / Kanga G3
October 09, 2008, 21:34 |
I have a Powerbook 3400c 200mhz, the direct predecessor. I can attest to their heaviness and thickness. But the sound system is great!! Makes the boot chime sound like a freight train!! Just Wish mine had a working ADB bus. It got fried somehow, so it's essentially useless. I wanna get another one, or a kanga. That and a Powerbook 550c are on my wish list. My 540c is an awesome machine, just wish the batteries were not dead. |

Hardware / Just got a Workgroup Server 8550!!
June 20, 2008, 05:53 |
Ah ok, that makes sense. I know it's a server, but I don't think I will reinstall the appleshare stuff. I have been needing a good machine to sync my 2 newtons ( can one machine handle 2?), as well as load the quicktake software since I got a 150, and the stylewriter 2500 stuff. I do have a G3 AIO I was going to use, but it has power supply problems. BTW, I have my Powerbook 1400 loaded with 7.6.1 and I used it to sync with my eMate, but it stopped being able to export my newtonworks documents, something about needing a printer, so I did a brain wipe and lost my docs, but now I think I know what was wrong. It had to do with a setting in the Teacher Setup app IIRC. Unrelated, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas. -digital

Hardware / Just got a Workgroup Server 8550!!
June 11, 2008, 00:33 |
Alright, I managed to get them formatted after booting in to 9.1 and fiddling in some control panels. 7.6 is installed, I have yet to put 7.6.1 on it, so I have been getting random type 11 errors. I installed apps off my Internet Connection Kit, fired up netscape 2.0, fought through the javascript errors, and installed iCab. I installed the nupower utilities off the floppy I had, not sure if it's the latest, but it works. For some reason, those apps say I have a 302mhz G3, and ASP in 7.6 says it's 195mhz, so I really have no clue. I also am going to install the ATI rage utilities, since I have a ATI PCI video card out of a B&W. It's not a rage 128, but the other one they used in the EDU market, the one with the mac video port and S-video in and out ports. Oh, and the PCI ethernet card is not working, what should I install to make it work? the built in 10 base works a treat, but I have seen a noticeable difference using 100 base. thanks. |

Hardware / Just got a Workgroup Server 8550!!
June 10, 2008, 23:12 |
Hey guys, I just got one, and it is a beast. It has been heaviliy upgraded. The 604 has been replaced with a NewerTech G3 at 336mhz, according to ASP. I also got 2 boxes for such upgrades, with the original processors inside. The RAM has been pushed to 224mb. There is what I assume to be the stock 2gb HD as the primary drive, and a huge 20gb in there as secondary. It has a 10/100 Apple branded ethernet PCI card, and has Mac OS 9.1 and the Appleshare Server software loaded. I want to convert this into a very, VERY fast system 7 machine. I put in my System 7.6 CD, and it booted right up. My 15" studio LCD even worked, as did the ADB keyboard and mouse plugged into it, which is funny because according to mactracker, this display "requires" 8.0 to work. Anyways, I normally would not have any problems installing, but for some reason the hard drives will not format. I went to the special menu, and it says the drives are locked. I tried disk first aid, drive setup, and Apple HD SC setup, all the apps in the utilities folder. So, can anyone help me get 7.6 on this rocket? It's no G3 or G4 upgraded 9600, but it's almost as good, and will run circles around my Powerbook 1400c 133mhz machine with 40mb running 7.6.1. thanks. |

Operating System / What version for a classic I?
February 18, 2008, 11:18 |
Perhaps what I should do is work my way up slowly, starting with 7.0.1, then 7.1, and then 7.1.1, and roll it back based on that. I am curious why exactly it's illegal to download 7.1 and 7.1.1? 7.0.1 is free, as is 7.5.3 and 7.5.5. What about 7.6? or is it because apple has not gotten around to releasing 7.6 yet? -digital

Operating System / What version for a classic I?
February 18, 2008, 06:18 |
Hey guys, I have my little Classic I all set up on my desk next to my B&W G3 running tiger. I plan on using it as a simple IRC machine. I did have it fully decked out with 7.5.5, but that has since proved to be too much of a drag on the little old 68000. So now, I loaded 6.0.8 on it, and it runs nice, boots VERY fast (34 seconds from a cold start!!), with 7.5.5 I had to wait about 4 minutes for everything to come up, and menus and such were slow to draw, requiring about 5 seconds each. I would keep using 6.0.8, but I can't get it configured on the net for some reason. I am using a Asante EN/SC-10T, and the driver does install and run in 6.0.8, but I can't get MacTCP to work right. So I figure, go for a lower end System 7. I was thinking 7.0.1 with system tune up 3.0 installed, or System 7.1/7.1.1 (pro) Anyone have an idea? Will the lower the version number be better, or is there something in 7.1 that makes it faster? I want speed, and stability. oh yeah, specs: Motorola 68000 8mhz 4mb of RAM (max) 40mb HD Asante EN/SC-10T adapter. external apple branded FDHD with eject issues. -digital

Hardware / what is the fastest system 7 power book ??
May 21, 2007, 05:50 |
were there no G3 or CPU upgrades for the 3400? because the 2400 and 3400 use the same motherboard AFAIK, so if it works in one, it should work in both. I also think the kanga has a fixed CPU. funny story: I actually passed up a 3400c on my local CL for $40, and a kanga on ebay for $30 within one week. I still feel stupid. -digital

Hardware / Blackbird
April 03, 2007, 14:33 |
I just got everything installed too. less than 15mb free on the hard drive. OS 8 really has some things I like, like the spring loaded folders, contextual menus, and the folders you can place at the bottom of the screen. I would like some extra speed. it takes about 2 minutes to boot. with the stock 7.1.1 installed, it was a rocket in less than 20 seconds. I may go back to 7.6.1 soon. i'll connect my 180 to the 540c and install across localtalk, since there is a full set of boot floppies on the 180. also, I can not seem to use the modem, as I don't have the global village software for it. does anyone know where I can get a full set? GV's site only lists an updater, and that won't work. it seems like a rare piece of software, but it's kinda required. -digital

Hardware / Blackbird

my latest aquisition (or as we MLAers like to call them: Liberations), is a Powerbook 540c. It's a nice little machine, with a nice surprise: FULL 36mb ram!! AND, I have an someone who wants to give me a FULL 68040 from a 550c for FREE!! it's an awsome little machine, sans the broken power adapter, which still works (case chipped apart), but it powers the machine fine wrapped in duct tape. it came with flat 7.5 (I have a set of flat 7.5 somewhere, I should image it, as that seems rare. only seen 7.5.3 on apple's site.) I then proceded to install 7.1.1, off a set of 520/540c restore floppies I have. I can image those too, if anyone is interested. right now, i'm updating it to 8.1 right now, see how fast that is (and it is), but installation is dead slow over localtalk, connected to my wallstreet running 9.0.4. I've been thinking about dual booting 8.1 and 7.6.1, just for fun, but it's only got a 320 or so mb hard drive. how much space does 7.6.1 take up? because it's sitting on 75mb right now with 8.0 (before I updated). perhaps I should just run 7.6.1. whadaya think? -digital

Software / Audion 3 for Mac OS 7 anyone?
December 03, 2006, 03:16 |
no, not soundjam. I ment to say Audion 3 crashed when trying to load a single MP3. so the code must be firmly rooted in mac OS 8. one thing I am curious about is mactracker. the latest version for classic, which is even behind the windows version, requires mac OS 8.5. I wonder if the author would be willing to make an OS 7 version? or is there some older version of it exist for system 7? if not, I wonder if I could remove the 8.5 limit. what's strange is that it will let you install, but not run it... -digital

Software / Audion 3 for Mac OS 7 anyone?
December 02, 2006, 22:37 |
I am using sundjam MP. this was like a test playground. it also crashes when I try to load a single MP3 file, so it must need some OS 8 code. dunno what... oh well, at least I tried something. It's called doing something because I can. -digital

Software / Audion 3 for Mac OS 7 anyone?
December 02, 2006, 21:57 |
unfortunantly not yet, but I have been digging through the code to try and find it. removing artifical limits arnt hard to remove. I just opened every resource until I found "error" "system" and "required" strings. I removed three of them, including the actuall error box. This means there is possibe iPod support in system 7.6.1!! however, it's not all roses, it is crashing hard (fortunantly, I have MacsBugs installed, so it drops into that environment.) this happens when I had songs to a playlist, like alot of them. MacsBugs reports "PowerPC illegal instruction at 40010004 _ClkNoMem+05C96" which suggests it ran out of memory, so I will try to expand it's overhead, then try again. any thoughts? or any other apps you want me to remove artifical limits from? remember, it's all just lines of code, it can be changed. -digital
