playing with resedit has taught me alot so far. I just figured out how to remove the artifical limit of Mac OS 8 for audion 3.0.2, and i'll be glad to stuff it and upload it here. it's runing just fine on system 7.6.1.

Outstanding, simply outstanding. I am sure many would enjoy Audion on their 7.6.1 machines (I would). Perhaps you might share some of your insights in finding and removing the artifical system requirements. Any techniques that would broaden the application base for older hardware would be of great benefit.

Is it running without Appearance Manager?

unfortunantly not yet, but I have been digging through the code to try and find it.

removing artifical limits arnt hard to remove. I just opened every resource until I found "error" "system" and "required" strings. I removed three of them, including the actuall error box.

This means there is possibe iPod support in system 7.6.1!!

however, it's not all roses, it is crashing hard (fortunantly, I have MacsBugs installed, so it drops into that environment.) this happens when I had songs to a playlist, like alot of them. MacsBugs reports "PowerPC illegal instruction at 40010004 _ClkNoMem+05C96" which suggests it ran out of memory, so I will try to expand it's overhead, then try again.

any thoughts? or any other apps you want me to remove artifical limits from?

remember, it's all just lines of code, it can be changed.

I don't think you can remove the Appearance Manager code from Audion.  Even if you get it to launch, it will never be stable.  Besides, whats wrong with SoundJam MP (after did, afterall, buy it and turn it into iTunes).

Also, there is no USB or Firewire (tried) on System 7, so no iPod support.

I am using sundjam MP. this was like a test playground. it also crashes when I try to load a single MP3 file, so it must need some OS 8 code. dunno what...

oh well, at least I tried something. It's called doing something because I can.

no, not soundjam. I ment to say Audion 3 crashed when trying to load a single MP3. so the code must be firmly rooted in mac OS 8.

one thing I am curious about is mactracker. the latest version for classic, which is even behind the windows version, requires mac OS 8.5. I wonder if the author would be willing to make an OS 7 version? or is there some older version of it exist for system 7? if not, I wonder if I could remove the 8.5 limit. what's strange is that it will let you install, but not run it...

Audion was really never completly stable IMO, I used a 5500 everyday for about six months, but it had some underlying hardware issue I could never hammer out.

yeah, Mactracker would be nice, but doesn't run in 7.6.1 (as you said).
I'm using instead a combination of GURU 2.9 (an application) and www.apple-history.com

The GURU gives basic info up to G4 Graphite Power Macintosh 500, and covers older models nicely.

Is the hack stable and fully working in  OS 8.0? If it is, could you tell me how to do it myself?
