1 Software / Another utility I have used with MS Word
October 02, 2016, 03:33
I also remembered another converter that is very effective in docx to doc formats:

http://www.panergy-software.com/buy/download.html

Here is rub with this converter; it only supports MacOS 9. To get around this limitation, I have personally networked System 7 and 9 Macs, used VNC to remote access the converter on the OS9 Mac and placed the converted file on a shared folder. Once converted, the Word 97-98 import within Word 5.1 from my last post to open the converted .doc file.

The respective converter for Windows or OS X can be used to convert your .docx files and then transfer your converted documents to the System 7 Mac using similar methods as outlined above. I have successfully installed file web servers to access files on Windows and OSX.
2 Software / Yes there is!

Yes AfterMac, there is!

The plug-in is called Word 97-98 Import and it lets both Word 5.1 and 6 to open Word '97 and '98 .doc files.

Here is the download link at Microsoft:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=18793

As you mentioned, it won't be compatible with new features, but it'll do a pretty good job in a pinch.

Sorry I didn't catch this much sooner! Hopefully it'll help some folks out in the future..  :-)

If it helps, I spotted an image of a 7.1 cd that works on the IIci here (it's the first link on the top right-hand side):

http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mac-os-install-cd-library

It may be too much work, but if you download and burn this CD on a PC and run it on an emulator like Sheepshaver or maybe Basilisk (setting them up on a new mac or pc takes some work and time), but from it you might be able to create a disk utility for your IICi. If you use a IIci ROM, the installer may yield a compatible floppy, which means that the desktop or laptop would have to be an older model with a floppy. I'm not sure if even pawn shops carry PCs with floppy drives!

Somehow I locked myself out of my username cballero, so I registered a new handle to be able to say goodbye to everyone hanging out at ST7!
5 Hardware / Powermac 8500 was one of my favorites!
October 01, 2016, 06:57
The Powermac 8500 was one of my favorites!

I used a PPC 6500 and loved it as well. I used it with the Mac Triniton AV display and Apple's first ergo keyboard.. talk about a cool setup!

On my wishlist were the black Apple TV, the Anniversary Ed. Mac, the 840AV 68k Mac, the original IIfx fully loaded and finally the 8600 and 9600 PowerMacs.

Oh, and of couse the original small Powerbook, the PB2400c, CPU, memory and keyboard upgraded, that would have been the Mac dream machine right there!

Did love my PB1400c and 3400c though :-D
6 Hardware / Dan's List of the Best (and Worst) Macs

Oh, I also don't see how the LC580 gets on the all in one list but the 575 doesn't. The monitor used in the 580 is junk compared to the one in the 575.

The Performa 575 was a Mac I got to use with my Apple color printer, the first one they produced with canon's inkjet technology. It was a marvel to use when they were fast.. go System 7!
7 Software / Another solution

If you can find an external SCSI floppy drive, another rarity nowadays, if your internal drive were ever to fail, this could allow you another way of booting your mac although if I recall correctly, the IIci has two floppy drives built-in.

Now I wonder what might happen if you take it into an Apple store?

Another possibility is to post on Craigslist to see if anyone has any old Mac floppy disks they could lend, sell or give you? Might be worth a try.

And lastly, an old external CD-drive would allow you to burn some older CD images even on a PC, but getting such a drive would probably be a much harder feat!
8 Software / Found a few more..
October 01, 2016, 06:23
This link has a slew of older OSes, but only a few will work with your Mac so review these downloads carefully:

http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/operating-systems

Again, once you have the file, getting it onto a disk, if you can still find any, will be the biggest problem.

Having a backup SCSI external drive is almost a must!

External zip (100mb) and the bigger jazz and orbs (1-1.2gb) drives and disks are even better because of the amount of system and software they can hold!

Good luck!
9 Software / loved those old macs!

I remember using my first Mac IIci. It was old but like magic!

I found one site offering disks. If you find any images online, the trick is having another old mac to transfer the image to a disk, so this site may be able to send you a rescue disk for your Mac baby!

I'm sure there's other sites, this was the only one I googled that had a quick fix.
10 Hardware / Any Mac CD games that run on System 7?
October 01, 2016, 06:05
I only ask because I remember when I CD games for my little one on a PB2300c she used as a baby.

You know, it would be nice to see some images of those in the mac garden, just a thought.
11 Operating System / System 7 Forever!

Well it's been a real good run here!

Dan, thank you for holding down this fort for so long man.

I guess it's like the old song, "another one bites the dust." Thank you for caring!

13 Software / System 7 VCD Players
October 01, 2016, 05:55
How many of you have tried or used VCD players on either a PPC or maybe a 68k Mac?

I've either tried or heard of both SimpleVCD and MacVCD and the latter I have used on ppc powerbooks runnning 7.6.

Video playback aside, it's fun pushing the envelope on old system 7 macs!  :-)

14 Operating System / Other possibilities CF Flash Disks
October 01, 2016, 05:50
Depending on the specific hardware, I've heard of CF Flash memory working on various powerbooks, so I imagine they would also work on desktops, somewhat like SSDs, just a little less state-of-the-art.

Those would probably runs faster, I'd imagine, the issue would be the old OS read-writes!
