Hardware / USB Storage for Performa 6400
March 21, 2012, 16:33 |
I thought each successive version of USB was supposed to be backward-compatible with the last. Is this not true? |

Hardware / USB Storage for Performa 6400
March 20, 2012, 18:37 |
Hello! After restoring a PowerPC Performa 6400 to health with the installation of a new hard drive, I am now concerned with data transfer methods. The current state of my home network makes LAN or direct connection impossible. I was wondering if this machine would accept USB mass storage. I have empty PCI slots. Are there cards out there that could add USB ports in this way? I'm sure that the OS would accept drivers (Currently, it's 8.6. I loaded the OS from my old iMac boot disc). Could anyone chime in on this? Anyone done something like it before? Thanks! -thehackercat |

Operating System / System 7.5x on a Performa 6400
March 18, 2012, 21:55 |
Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I'm just coming around to say that the problem was actually with the HDD (a 1.6GB Quantum TM). Something about a "bad sibling link" - I'm going to assume that's a file system problem. So I've ordered a 2GB Quantum TM (It even comes with the drive sled!) and I'll install it, format it, and install the Mac OS on it when it arrives in the next couple of days. Maybe when I get this computer working, I can actually participate in this community! Thanks for the advice last year, -thehackercat |

Off Topic Discussion / Your worst computer problem?
June 11, 2011, 03:59 |
I had a generation-2 iBook G3 that could dual-boot OS 9.2.2 and some early version of OS X. Somehow, I managed to create a copy of the OS X System Folder, but not everything was moved and some of the files were corrupt. When the computer started up from that System Folder, I had a hell of a time trying to figure out what the problem was. I had lost the boot disk long ago, as is my habit for things so important. In the end, I think I booted from an 8.6 disk or something..

Operating System / Are you using a RAM disk?
June 11, 2011, 03:53 |
I used Finale 3.2 and Band-in-a-Box for my composition. Naturally, all those MIDI banks were quite taxing for a pre-PPC machine, and Finale had quite the memory footprint. I believe I put most of the supporting data files inside the RAM disk, because the Finale application was too large to fit on a 3.5" floppy.

Hardware / Need a new HD for Performa 6400/180
June 10, 2011, 02:56 |
Hey, great! I can boot from the OS 8.6 disk and use Disk Setup right there. Thanks a lot, I was scared that it was an older type of hard drive or something. Time to do some shopping. |

Hardware / Need a new HD for Performa 6400/180
June 09, 2011, 18:28 |
Hey y'all: I recently found a startup disc for my pre-G3 tray-loading iMac. It contained Mac OS 8.6, so I decided to use it to boot up one of my old Performas. When I finally got it running, I used Disk First Aid to verify & repair the HD and it returned a message "Invalid sibling link". So I figure I have directory problems on that disk. The disk itself could be scrambling the filesystem, so using Disk Warrior might not be the best, as the disk would just scramble itself again. Point being, I need a new hard drive. I plan to do a clean install of Mac OS 8.6 and then downgrade to 7.x.x whenever I can find a boot disk. Where can I go to find information on the hard drive types accepted by this model? Macintosh Performa 6400/180 Thanks in advance, thehackercat |

Operating System / System 7.5x on a Performa 6400
April 19, 2011, 04:24 |
Hey there, I have a PowerPC-equipped Performa 6400. I want to start it up, but I get an error message that says something like "This system folder is too old for this Mac". I haven't touched the thing since I last powered it down some 10 years ago, and it worked fine then! I don't want to lose all the stuff on my old hard drive, but it looks like I'm going to have to re-install the Mac OS. I can only find OS 7.5 as /19 separate image files/! Is there any disk image out there that can be burnt to a CD-R? I have an old tray-loading iMac that can do the job. |

Hardware / Performa 63CD memory upgrade

Quote from: "24bit" Too bad. I think I'll try that. The back cover is missing, so removing the logic board would be easy. |

Hardware / Performa 63CD memory upgrade
April 17, 2011, 04:42 |
Quote from: "dpaanlka" AFAIK, there never was a Performa 63CD. There is a 630CD (one zero) and a 6300CD (two zeros), which look superficially similar on the outside but are actually very different - one being a 68k and one is a PowerPC. Oh, sorry - It's definitely the first one, as I'm certain it does NOT have a PowerPC processor. |

Hardware / Performa 63CD memory upgrade
April 16, 2011, 18:16 |
Thanks a lot guys, but I don't think this machine even *has* System Profiler on it. What's more, I can't get any of my PCs to format Mac floppies (even with Emulator Explorer), so moving a utility to the machine is hopeless. |

Hardware / Performa 63CD memory upgrade
April 15, 2011, 04:40 |
Quote from: "24bit" Hello, Yes siree, that appears to be it. I don't think it actually has a PowerPC processor, but I can't find any specs that say otherwise. Of the 6300 series, the 63CD may have been an oddball. |

Hardware / Performa 63CD memory upgrade
April 14, 2011, 22:43 |
Hello there, I have a Performa 63CD machine which I have revived from a long sleep in the attic. I was wondering whether it can accept any more memory than it already has. I'm not familiar with the model, or its specifications. It's running some variant of system 7.2. Can anyone tell me how much onboard memory it has, or if upgrading the memory is even possible? Thanks in advance! |
