Hardware / SyquestExternal EZDrive135mb Won't Mount
October 16, 2009, 13:46 |
Your forum group has been instrumental in helping me connect OS 10.4 to 7.5.5 by ethernet. Thankyou!! The goal was to transfer old syquest SCSI drive data to a performa, then iBook to archive on modern media. After 3 syquest drive transfers, the EZDrive will no longer mount on the Performa. I've tried SCSI address changes, extensions on/off, reboot with disk on, (all the old SCSI tricks I could recall) but no success. The discs I successfully transfered/mounted earlier no longer do so. I have 20 more disks to transfer. I read where SCSI Probe might work but the only version on Version Tracker indicates it is for OS 8.x. Silverlining light popped up on my startup screen when the disks were mounting and now it is nowhere to be found. Does anyone have a suggestion on this? Perhaps links to software that would help? I have 7.5.5 running. Thank you much! |

Operating System / Connecting OS 7.5.3 to 10.4.11 w/ ethern
October 06, 2009, 20:17 |
Finally got the upgraded 7.5.5 to log into the iBook running 10.4.11 by connecting the ethernet cables to a router I still had around. figured out the passwords need to be short for 7.5.5 (I used 5 characters and it worked). I'm happy to say that I was able to transfer 4 of about 20 Syquest SCSI EZ 135MB discs full of data to the iBook. Unfortunately, the EZ drive will no longer mount on the Performa and I haven't done anything to the system!! I've tried minimizing the number of extensions, maximizing the extensions, different SCSI addresses and now I'm stuck. I can connect the computers but the whole goal was to get the old data onto CDs and DVDs and now I can't get the SCSI to mount. I now remember how frustrating SCSI (and extensions) was in the 90's. Two questions: 1) Now my Performa is freezing on startup with my last selection of extensions. Does anyone remember how to start up with minimum extensions on? 2) Does anyone have tricks to mount SCSI devices? Besides the SCSI addresses it seems like there were 3rd party solutions to force mount (like disk utility?)? Thank you for all the networking assistance. Hopefully a little extension and SCSI advice is all I now need. Curtis |

Operating System / OS 7.5.5 to OS 10.4.11 ethernet
October 04, 2009, 14:21 |
Taken a steep learning curve but I'm running my performa/iBook ethernet through a router. I can finally see my iBook in the Chooser of the Performa!! (Can't see Performa on iBook) My hopefully final hurdle is to overcome the username/password the Chooser requests on the Performa to log in to the iBook. The names on the iBook I use seem to be too long (i.e. like the password). What am I missing in setting up the iBook so the OS 7 system can log into it? I am slightly familiar with setting up users in OS 10. but don't have any recall of what the requirements are in OS 7. I'm almost there (I hope)!! Thank you for the help. |

Operating System / TCP/IP and Control panel?
September 14, 2009, 02:03 |
Dave- I guess it's been too long working OSX and Windows XP issues but I'm a bit lost with your suggestions. First, I'm trying to plug my ethernet cable into my Performa ethernet card on one side and my iBook ethernet port at the other end with no router. What in the control panels will allow me to turn on TCP/IP? I have turned off all extensions with extension manager except for the OS. Is there perhaps something off I should turn on because I don't see anything in the control panel that allows me to do that. Dan- I just loaded the upgrades based on the 19 files coming off the Apple site. Getting those to run took me most of the weekend because I don't have any means to connect to the Performa except burning CDs with the Mac Standard HFS and opening them with the Disk Copy on the performa. Is there a particular piece of the system I should be looking for that may not have loaded? Thanks a bunch to both of you!! |

Operating System / Partially Solved!! wahoo
September 14, 2009, 00:56 |
One way or another I seem to have figured out using Disk Copy that was on the Performa how to mount an image of Disk 01 of the 7.5.3 upgrade set off the old HFS CD I created. The installation ran apparently great. The whole purpose of this was to be able to connect the performa to an iBook running 10.4.11 and I was told in an Apple post that through the 7.5.3 Chooser>Appleshare I could enter the IP address of my iBook if file sharing, etc. were active on both computers. Turns out there isn't a IP button in the Chooser of the 7.5.3 as suggested. I have an ethernet card on the Performa that was used for dial up access 14 years ago. Does anyone have links or information that could take me down the final steps to connect these two computers? Ultimately, I'm trying to access the SCSI port on the Performa to burn CDs from about 20 Syquest EZ135MB disks. (I already refreshed my memory on the trials of SCSI termination, etc. and I can access that data :-) Thank you Curtis |

Operating System / OS 10.4.11 to 7.5.1
September 13, 2009, 18:56 |
I've see some long strings on upgrading to 7.5.3 (in my case from 7.5.1) which is what I need to do on my old Performa 6200CD (with ethernet card) so I can access the SCSI port and thus, data on 20 or so EZ 135MB Syquest disks. <I understand from an Apple forum that in the chooser of 7.5.3 I can enter an IP address across my ethernet to connect to my iBook. If that isn't correct, I've been led down the wrong path.> My dilemma: I have downloaded the 19 OS 7.5.3 images and learned how to burn an older HFS CD with those on it. That CD is fully recognized on the Performa. (whew) The Performa 6200 will not allow those OS files to be copied to that HD. However, I DO have a USB floppy drive and I have copied other files from my iBook to the Performa on HD floppies so that is working. I think the main questions remaining I hope someone can help with are: 1) where/how can I create a bootable floppy (assuming that's what I need to boot and run the CD resident upgrade) and 2) where may I find a .sea of Stuffit expander? The .hqx I find for stuffit expander requires the expander in the first place(catch 22). My desire is to get access to the SCSI data but I would like to access the web using iCab or some other browser if possible and I'm pretty sure I'll need to unstuff files along the way. By the way, this Performa has only been connect to the web via dial up and so long ago I have no memory of how I did that. Thank you so much for your help. crt |
