1 Software / Burning CDs on a PB1400 -TOAST 3?
February 07, 2010, 23:43
Continuing this just for accuracy:

The PB1400 CD that I have is System 7.5.3 and has the PB1400 Enabler - I have read that System 7.5.5 is not compatible with the PB1400, and also that the downloadable System 7.5.3 can not be used with the PB1400.

I have personally run 7.5.3 (w/enabler), 7.6, 7.6.1, and every release from 8.0 through 9.1 on my PB1400.   I currently have it set up with 7.6.1 and 9.1 on separate partitions, to allow running all the applications that I want to have installed.

2 Software / Burning CDs on a PB1400 -TOAST 3?

As far as I know, the PB1400 will not run any version of System 7 except:

 - System 7.5.3 with the special enabler that was included on the PB1400 software CD.

 - Systems 7.6 and 7.6.1

3 Software / Burning CDs on a PB1400 -TOAST 3?

Curious - I used Toast 4.1.2 and 4.1.3 OEM to burn any number of CDs on my PB1400.  I never ran version 3.x.  I'm pretty sure I didn't try burning CDs under System 7 - definitely did under 8.6 and 9.1.

4 Classifieds / Wanted - Working or Dead PB1400 Battery
January 30, 2010, 16:34
I have a couple of dead PB1400 batteries that I could offer up.

I also like the drawer idea.  I haven't had a working battery for my PB1400 for a few years.  Good place for keeping my bootable CF cards with alternate system folders.

5 Hardware / Your most current Mac

My most 'modern' Macs are a 450MHz G4 Cube, and a 400 MHz Pismo, both of which I use routinely under Mac OS X 10.4.11.

My kids have somewhat later models - an iBook G4 1.07 GHz and an aluminum PowerBook G4 1.25 GHz.

I am able to log into my Mac OS X machines, mount disks, and copy files to my PB1400 with no problems.  The PB1400 has System 7.6.1,  with all the setup recommendations from this site _except_ it has Open Transport 1.1.2 instead of the later version recommended here (for Location Manager compatibility).  I am logging onto either a Cube or a Pismo, each running 10.4.11.

In Chooser, I select Appleshare, and then enter the IP address of the machine that I want to access.

7 Software / RAM Doubler
April 09, 2009, 13:49
I used RamDoubler 8/9 on my PB1400cs/117 for awhile, and was never really convinced that it gave any improvement in performance over the virtual memory scheme in Mac OS 8.6 or 9.  There may have been enough bottlenecks in that system to obscure the benefits (e.g. - no L2 cache).  My major reason to keep it running was disk space - with a 750MB hard drive, the extra 128MB used by virtual memory to acheive the same RAM expansion as with RamDoubler  was confining at best.

That said, I just fired up my PB1400cs/133, which has a 6GB disk handed down from my Pismo, running 7.6.1, and installed RamDoubler 9.  It boots just fine, and maybe does feel a bit quicker on a short 'test drive'.  If you can find a copy of the RamDoubler 9 installer, I'd go for it.

RamDoubler 9 (and 8) has a protection scheme that writes a custom file into the System Folder, and there are some validation checks against this upon boot.  You really need to keep a copy of the installer available if you do a lot of messing around with system upgrades, renaming or swapping the hard disk, etc.

For a general-purpose image viewer and slideshow application, try Jade 1.2 - you can find it with a quick search in the Info-Mac archive.

9 Software / WordPerfect Works 1.2.1
February 21, 2009, 17:34
Another possibility is MacLink Plus.  I checked the translator list for MacLink Plus Deluxe 11, and there was a WordPerfect Works for Windows translator.  I suppose there is a chance that the file formats are the same.

I also checked the translator lists for other software, as follows:

WordPerfect 3.5e:  No WP Works translator that I could find;

AppleWorks 5: No WP Works translator, either in the XTND translators or in the DataViz translators installed with AW5;

MacLink 8.x (installed from my PB1400 CD): The WP Works for Windows translator _was_ included.

If all you are looking for is content, another way might be to change the Type/Creator to something like SimpleText (TEXT/ttxt), and open it that way.  There may be a lot of blank space and grunge, but I've usually been able to find the text part of a word processing file using this route.

10 Operating System / Re: Tracking Installed Files

What is the best method or program for tracking all of the files that programs install on your hard drive? I like to know that the program is truly gone when I remove it. Is there a reliable App for this?

One tool that can be used (with caution) for System Folder items is Extension Manager.  Its list of Control Panels and Extensions has a column for the 'Package', and you can sort on this column.  Software developers who did their homework correctly include package information with installed System Folder items.  So, for example, if I wanted to remove AppleWorks 5.0.3 from my PB1400, I could look in Extension Manager to see what AppleWorks installed.

The caution - and it's a big one - is that many programs will install or re-install items that are installed by the system installer, and/or by other software packages.  So in my case, if I were to delete all items installed by Newton Connection Utilities (installed after AppleWorks), I would delete Xtend Power Enabler, which is used by AppleWorks for doing some of its file translations.

OTOH - If you wanted to delete Internet Explorer, and had no other Microsoft applications installed, you could safely delete all of the extensions with a Microsoft package name.

11 Operating System / Are you running Mac OS 7?
February 11, 2009, 14:36
I recently pulled my PowerBook 1400cs/133 out of retirement to act as a 'bridge' computer when upgrading my Lady Technophobe from a Quadra 650 running 7.6.1 to an iMac G3/400 running Panther.  The PowerBook 1400 has an ethernet card; I used LocalTalk to pull her Claris Emailer data off the Quadra, and then sent it to the iMac over ethernet.  I had the PB1400 running Mac OS 9.1, but 'upgraded' it to System 7.6.1 for this task, and for use in its semi-retirement.  I still have a 9.1 install on a CompactFlash card for those odd occasions when I might need it.

I also have an SE in inactive-but-working status that IIRC has 7.0.1 installed.

12 Operating System / Problem W/Open Transport On Performa 636

Try disabling AppleTalk and TCP/IP first, then switching, then rebooting and re-enabling.

Also be sure to update OpenTransport.

A thought - If you have done all of the System 7 Today - recommended updates, you would have installed Open Transport 1.3.  I had gone thru and installed all of the updates on my PB1400cs/133, and then found out that Location Manager wouldn't recognize AppleTalk and TCP/IP configurations that I had created.  I did a complete reinstall of System 7.6.1 with all of the updates _except_ I only updated as far as Open Transport 1.1.2, and the problem went away.  Perhaps you are having an extension conflict relating to the version of Open Transport.

1) The open/close animation of folders - I'd like to be able to turn this off.

3) Is there any app that will give the ability to close a program with only one click (like the "X" in Windows)?  It seems counter-intuitive to have to open the file menu and click Quit for everything.

Thanks,
David

Hi, David -

Take a look at the stuff on this page:

http://trace.wisc.edu/computer/mac/macshare.html

Most of the items are System 7.x - era, and most are downloadable from that page.  In particular, take a look at:

1) Hidden Finder Features or Hidden Finder Secrets - Both include turning the zoom rectangles off.  Not sure about System 7.6 compatibility, although I seem to recall having tried Hidden Finder Features at one point without catastrophic results...

BTW - There's also NoFinderZoom 8 and NoFinderZoom 9 for later system versions - You can find them here:

http://www.madrau.com/html/others.html

3) Quit It - Quits a program when the last window is closed.

Also - although 'Get Info' was included in contextual menus in the Classic Mac OS (when installed/implemented), I don't think the copy/paste file function was ever available, unless by a third party.

14 Hardware / PB 1400 & OS 7.5.3

I tried Bill's recommendations, but it didn't work.  When I ran the installer, it said it didn't recognize the computer.  Any ideas?

Thanks,

David

The early PB1400s originally shipped with System 7.5.3, but the installer provided on the PB1400 CD also installed an 'enabler' file. Apple provided these enabler files so that new computer models could work with existing system software that didn't recognize the computer.  I haven't seen this particular enabler available for download anywhere, and from your experience, it may be that a purpose-built installer (i.e. - the one on the PB1400 CD) may be required as well as the enabler.
