I'm curious about the best way to upgrade my old Performa 550. Basically I just want to see what it can do, so I really have no purpose for it besides maybe playing those old mac games and just goofing off with it. I know I'll probably end up spending more on it than what it's really worth but that's ok.

I'm curious if this 2G would be overkill or if I should look at something a bit smaller.

Also, what about the Sonnet Presto Plus to add a little more RAM and Ethernet support?

Wow... definitely look on eBay.  2 GB SCSI drives should be like $5 - $15 there.

I've been toying around with the Presto Plus idea myself for quite some time.  While it'd be neat, I'm still having a hard time justifying a $100 purchase for my $5 LC III.  On the other hand I can totally see myself caving in just because I think it'd be fun to deck out my machine as much as possible.  If you have the money I say go for it.

just perusing We Love Macs, I can't begin to imagine how they've stayed in business.  iMac G4 800 with a 15" screen for $500 is retarded, let alone the "regular price" of $800.  Pioneer DVR-107's for over $200?  Nonsense.

The OP said he found a 2 GB hard drive at We Love Macs for the ridiculous price of $70

Thanks, Dan.

Yes, that's exactly what I was getting at.  I'd definitely shop elsewhere.

Essentially yes any 50pin SCSI drive will work fine with 7.6.1. The LowEndMac swaplist generally has all manner of  these drives available for a few dollars.

Those that have the Apple logo on them will definately work with Apple's drive setup, but most others will too. I have 7.6.1 on a Duo 280 with a 300MB drive so basic functionality does not require a huge drive.

Bill,
I just posted on the software side. I was asking about OS 7.6.1 on my Duo 280c. It currently has OS 7.1. Should I upgrade?

I have no idea what you intend to do with your Duo 280 and am not in a position to make the call on upgrading its OS. I use mine with Nisus Compact to do some letter writing in the evening, and also play some Solitaire. I could do both of those using 7.1 but I use 7.6 mainly because that is what is installed on it. And as is pointed out in the other thread, changing the OS on a Duo is not a trivial task.

My advice would be that if you are getting done what you want to get done with the Duo and 7.1 then I would stick with it. Much of the thrust of 7.6.1 is to keep slower machines productive in a newer environment. That newer environment consists mostly of graphics and interenet intensive applications and regardless of what OS you choose for a Duo 280 its use in those environments will be limited.

Bill,
That is kind of how Dan answered this one. I have a PB 1400c running 7.6.1 I think that shoudl be good for me. THe Duo seems fine as is and I do not plan to use wireless or anything more modern with it, thanks.

For example, this web site is being served from an SGI logo hard drive (10 GB, 10,000rpm), which still worked fine with Apple's disk utilities.  In fact, it's not even a 50 pin SCSI drive, but a 68 pin Wide SCSI connected to the 8100's internal 50-pin SCSI with an adapter similar to this one.

I too run a Performa 550. I currently am networked via AppleTalk phone line hookup to a PowerPC/8500/120. Is it possible to put ethernet on the 550? I also run a Performa630CD, what about ethernet options for it?
