I just wasted three precious hours of my cramped up day running bash script code I generated with the latest implementation of Grok, to fix the rounding errors Quicken on MacOS experiences when importing Qif files. The first two scripts it gave me where somewhat useful in adjusting the date format. But-any-other-script-it-came-up-with-after-that, was pure unrefined crap! They resulting Qif files either didn't import at all (syntax errors) or they did and looked exactly the same as before. This wen on for hours and that darn AI produced script after script, ever so joyfully naming each "The final script to solve all your problems". Maybe the damn thing got onto Elon's stash of snowy powder. Or these dreaded Artificial "Intelligence" engines are so prone to hallucinations, that I wouldn't want that any of them to program my toaster in the morning. ![]() In the end it recommended at tool to me (cleanqif) that supposedly would Quote from: grok It will create cleaned .qif files ready for import. Many people report it completely eliminates the penny-off errors that manual scripts can't touch. Well, here is what the original author's webpage from the wayback machine says about this tool: Quote from: Johnner1000 Creating a QIF file for importing to Quicken 2013 That's not even close! We are handing entire industries over to these delusional software bots, who couldn't program a toilet seat w/o the sh1t hitting the fan. And the worst thing is the damn confidence with which they state: "I solved your problem for you!" |

I dislike the confidence people put in AI. Yes, it is a powerful tool, but don't take its word for it when it hands you advice. Just as you would when a real person gives you advice. I'm afraid it is a disconnected experience for most people. Disonnected in the sense that they have zero incling of the resources required to make this AI-thing tick. The only benefit I can see from AI (Copilot in this case) is that it can tell you which bleeping license you need out of a hundred options, to be able to do the thing you want to do.

Yeah, people are extremely trusting an ultimately extremely untrustworthy thing. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it presents itself like a human companion. I guess every one of us in the tech industry has had these aggrevating moments lately.

What p1sses me of to no end is the damn confidence these machines put in their replies. I mean, its ez enough - albeit annoying - to find out how utterly wrong it is when you try to run a faulty piece of code. But now we even entrust automated weapons systems to AI. Fully armed drones making life & death decisions with supposed "absolute certainty". Facial ID recognition systems that can get you arrested on the spot. As has happened countless times, specially in rural police departments that rely on such systems almost exclusively for lack of human resources. Automated software bots, that will put your name on countless black lists, getting you travel banned, shadow banned and your bank accounts cancelled - just because some part of your behavior was deemed "suspicious" by an AI that seems to be unable to fault check its own analysis. For whatever reason, our present day artificial "intelligence" can't do what we teach every 5th grader: Correct yourself if you're wrong. And beware that you will make mistakes!

Makes me think of plot themes like those found in Minority Report not the same exact idea, but it makes you wonder what our society's future holds with its massive overdependence in technology; nothing like it used to be, that's for sure!

@cballero I also thought of Minority Report. Getting arrested just because an AI said so. I would NEVER rely on AI to produce code. I don't know why ANYBODY would. The code quality is almost always guaranteed to be $H17. The decision makers in our world are malicious and evil. No sane person would have ever allowed AI to be inflicted upon the world. The scourge of stupidity is out of control. At this point, I think humanity is just doomed. Any species that would annihilate itself because of its stupidity deserves to go extinct. I am infinitely ashamed and offended that I am considered to even be of the same species as some of the mentioned stupid and innately-self destructive organisms. Bringing another life into this FUBAR hellscape only sentences the innocent victim to a lifetime of torture and punishment, and should be considered a crime against the universe. I can't wait until I escape this torture dimension.

Dum spiro spero Children are the future and as long as there is future, there is hope. My one regret in life is that I don't have kids. All else is negligible at the moment of death.

You are welcome to disagree. I wonder how the parents in Gaza feel. There is no way I would bring more victims into this horror of a world.

We are all here because of mom and dad. In some places in the world, family's all you got. The world has never played fair, but kiddos give most people hope; they just don't realize how much till they actually have 'em. Unfortunately for others, they have been upside down for so long that having kids is a nightmare for them and their kiddos. Doesn't make having them wrong, just each situation is unique to its circumstances; I have two beautiful daughters who someday might have their own kiddos if they desire to have some

Are you sure about that '040? Sure it'd be nice to have kids in a perfect world, but the reality is that the future looks bleak, and in many places in the world they are often kidnapped, murdered, forced into labor or war as child soldiers, and other heinous acts. You're speaking from a position of privilege, because you're lucky enough to have never experienced that stuff, but many people aren't as fortunate. I can't imagine a worse thing than seeing that happen to your own kids, hence I feel it's safer and an act of mercy to not have them (especially now in the US since there seem to be a proliferation of psychos of all kinds). When I was young and naive, sure I wanted kids, but after things I've seen and learned about, my position on that changed. Remember the only way to win from Wargames?

Never imagined i’d see an anti natalist discussion in a system 7 forum lol. Such is life: ups and downs, suffering and joy, a big unfair game of chance. Nobody is born to a life without suffering, but seeing life as only suffering is also vastly incomplete and honestly sad. You always have the choice of not bringing people to the world, that is indeed your choice. Some of us don’t have the same perception on what it is to be born and alive. Things are bad, but from a historical point of view, there’s plenty of worse times to be alive, and I’m glad the people from that time decided to continue bringing people in, eventually you and me. I for one hope to continue to do what I can to lift the bottom and make it easier for whoever comes next. Maybe adding late to the AI topic: the combination of marketing hype, and corporate bandwagon makes AI so so so infuriating and dangerous. I can see it as a tool with some advantages that we’ll need to learn to use and adapt, but it’s not what they’re selling it as, and as a software engineer I’ve never wanted to get off tech as badly as I have right now. It makes me sad haha, and I hope we can bring back thoughtfulness, intention and humanity, because right now it doesn’t feel that way.

Quote from: ShinobiKenobi Are you sure about that '040?[As sure as anybody is who knows true love. If you don't know love, you don't know hope. Quote from: ShinobiKenobi Remember the only way to win from Wargames?[Remember the professor's original attitude? He sounded a lot like you. But it were the kids - those teenagers who wanted a chance to grow up and have kids of their own - who finally convinced him that this world of ours is worth fighting for and living in. Our world is messed up and the shit hits the fan 24/7/365. Yet on-every-graveyard of this planet you'd lose, if the dead would be allowed to take a vote on whether or not to return back to Earth for just a single day. I picked a dog from the desert as a pup who turned out to be nothing but trouble. He growls, he chases cats and rabbits whenever he gets a chance and he sure as heck is too smart for his own good. Yet when he got sick I scrapped my last few bucks together to get him to a vet and now that he is doing better I "joyfully" await his first bucked of mischief again. Life is so precious, only those who walked in the shadow of death can appreciate its glory. I had a very "interesting" childhood and life long depressions as a price to pay for it. And I am not talking about your Monday blues here. So when I step out into the light, the wide blue sky shimmering above me, I take that in and do-not-complain. Whether God exists or not, whether he cares or not - I appreciate a divine blessing when its being send my way. We should all learn to be grateful for the small gifts that life holds for us. For w/o that sense of gratitude, how can we expect happiness to find its way to our doorstep?

Some deep stuff being discussed here, all started by a man's frustration with AI! It is ultimately each individual's decision to bring new life in the world, even if they probably shouldn't. (father of 2, which I never thought I'd have)
