I have some phonenet dongles, and made a terminating jack for one, but it doesn't fit right in the female jack. The package of the jacks clearly says they are RJ-11, but they do not match the shape of the phonenet jacks. I verified with every source I found that, yes, it uses RJ-11 jacks. Are there different RJ-11 connectors? I know there are registered jack types with other numbers, but I only thought there was one RJ-11. Am I going crazy? |

I do not know about phone net cable connectors, but the most commonly mixed up connectors are the RJ1 and RJ45, which look almost identical, but one does not fit the other. From what I recall one goes from the handset to the phone body, while the other goes from the phone body to the wall jack. I might well be off base here, sorry about that, but the RJ45 and RJ11 are very commonly mixed up connectors.

You're right, RJ-45 is used for ethernet networks, and is noticeably larger. I took some close-ups of the front and back or top and bottom of the jacks. One side Other side They are clearly different shapes. The bigger one says 12 on the snap, and the smaller one says H 7. I will do more looking on the subject. Also, yes I know the resistors don't match. I couldn't find any 120R resistors around here. Hopefully the 100R would work, otherwise I can go to my parents' house, where I have an organized drawer of them. Ah, nevermind, I found a 120R  Still confused how both sizes are RJ-11 lol

The left hand connector looks like RJ11, typically used for phone lines. The right hand connector looks like RJ10, typically used for phone handsets. They both have 4 conductors but RJ10 is smaller. Also of interest is RJ12 - same size as RJ11 but 6 condu ctors. One final point - RJ11/12 plug will fit into RJ45 socket (but not good practice as outside pins of socket can get damaged.c
