my first phone back in 2009-2011-ish was a kid-friendly Android phone i used to sideload apps quite often on it unfortunately side-loading will no longer work on any Android device and you cant jailbreak iOS past iOS 17 these days from what i understand this article explains googles choice perfectly in my opinion (modern browser needed albeit the page is text on a white page with no ads and pictures)

Android phones will always be able to be side loaded as long as you can find a way to root the darn thing and be willing to accept the loss of warranty that usually goes along with it.

Now the one thing that is a bummer here is that more and more finance and OAuth apps simply refuse to be installed - much less run - on rooted Android devices.

So if you need your phone for work and/or banking/shopping you bettet not even thing of rooting it. But even that is not something I bother much thinking about.

I've come to accept that my actual phone is a dead brick to me, as far as the innerts are concerned. I only use it for phone, banking, OAuth and GPS stuff.

Everything "fun" I do on my tablets. Our world is headed towards 1984 in short order. The EU will soon demand that AI bots be monitoring every chat on every end device operating within the Union.

Next your own gallery app be scanning the pics on your phone for "nasty" content (like Apple already did before they retracted that "feature" again).

Western societies are aging rapidly and old folk scare easily. The dumbest quote ever shared is that about "whosoever is ready to trade freedom for the promise of security...".

Its dumb because every society just scared enough will be ready to trade all of their freedoms and then some for the flimsiest promise of security. Freedom is one of those "rights" that nobody values, until it is lost.

Accept the inevitable. What you should be looking out for next are PDF files and web pages with fonts too tiny to read (or white on white lettering) sending secret commands to AI bots running on your device.

That's not crazy science fiction, that's already happening now! And many of those AI bots you won't be able to uninstall w/o breaking the OS - root or no root.

More like: Time to read up on your Newspeak Dictionary and train yourself in "double think".

1984 was never meant as a dystopian science fiction novel. Its an instruction booklet for the times to come. George Orwell knew the direction all technological societies are headed to. Its inevitable.
