That is not at all uncommon when starting Linux and common to just break things the first time we give anything a try. Like with MacOS in Linux you can create a new user, who will start with the default UI and settings, and is probably the easiest way to get back to something recognizable.

There is a lot of information and tutorials available as guides. Linux Mint, offers a UI that is familiar to Windows users. It is often easiest to start with work/tools with which you are familiar. Word processors, text editors graphics programs tend to be familiar across platforms and starting with work you are familiar with can be an easier path in, plus once you have same familiarity with doing things on the OS the more comfortable you will be with it.

Leave UI tweaks and system modification until after you have shown yourself you can get the work done that you want to get done.

I think “trim” requires an electrical engineer to explain what specifically happens with that. I have two SSDs in my PowerMac G5 setup as a RAID. They have been in the system for about a decade and neither has had any problems. The PowerMac G5 supports sata 1.5 (which is an Apple only thing) and Intel SSDs are about the only SSDs that will work in the machine.

My G4 Mac Mini is running OS 9 from an SSD using a SATA to IDE adaptor and it has been running well from that drive. I am sure that OS 9 does not support trim and neither does OS X 10.5.  Maybe trim is just one of those new fangled tech things that create more problems than they solve. In any event SSDs can work fine in older systems.

not installation errors with the OS but with a zillion and one drivers and programs plus I just prefer windows or mac no need to have to know a zillion pointless things to use a OS plus it actually can fully uninstall stuff from a GUI that's built in I do have a strong preference for windows over mac os though as that's what I grew up with starting with xp then 7 then 10 and now 11 and no XP isn't nostalgic to me simply put I never stopped using it at least in a professional environment same with 7 for over 18 years I still get a good laugh remembering how back in 2020 our state got a lot of federal funds for the schools and Flint finally got the chance to upgrade from 98 to XP my dad was offered the job of upgrading these pc's he just laughed it off and told them to stop wasting money and get Chromebooks or something

Use what you are most comfortable on!

Linux does have a learning curve compared to Mac and Windows, but the rewards of learning it are huge.  Not only for your personal use, but it is an extremely good thing to have in your knowledge base and, if you work in anything tangentially related to IT, very useful on a resume.

Different distros have different levels of "friendliness", and not all are created equal.  Even different variations of a distro, like Ubuntu, may come with radically different gui's and desktops (such as Gnome, KDE, etc etc etc).  Driver support can be a major pain as both ATI and Nvidia have had extremely mixed history as far as open source goes.

But, anyway...you get what I'm saying.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been getting wary of updates for a while now. I know companies ruin and break people's devices intentionally with updates, which should be considered a crime IMO. Damaging property...

I've been afraid to apply updates for my Windows 10 system, which I use mostly for games.

Until people realize their cells will continue to metabolize and they can still breathe (probably better) without a M$ operating system, they will continue to support this scourge of anti-consumer crap. Corporate greed will never be satisfied. And as long as people continue to support this crap by buying it, it will never end.

Sadly, Windows or Mac are the only choices 90% of computer users know of. That's why I tell people about GNU/Linux.
