I've got it set up, but not permanently, only on a few ancient creaky laptops I don't typically leave running.  Been meaning to get it on a desktop machine and plan to soon.

I haven't used it for anything but web and usenet, but I'm lauland@macintoshgarden.org and lauland for AIM.  Might see you there one day.

europa is definitely on, but I don't know what their accounts are.  They don't post here, but are on hotline all the time.

For those that might want to try it, visit http://macdomain.net/

From http://vespernet.net/index.html, you MUST set your DNS to the address in the lower left hand corner (116.202.20.33).

Once you do, you're in an alternate very retro reality, as all your DNS will go through FogWraith's server, instead of "the real world".  http://search.com is a good place to start.  Everything is strictly http friendly.

Note, although you COULD do this on an actual modern machine, you probably don't want to change your DNS on a real one, at least not "permanently".

Its most useful with Vespernet PPP to connect machines (not just macs) to the "Internet" (with quotes) that can't otherwise get online, like ones with no ethernet.  But would otherwise be a very good way to surf "safely" using a non-modern browser that can't do today's SSL on any retro computer.

If you do want to access sites like the mac garden or this site, or other http sites on the normal internet, do you have to switch the DNS back to the previous setting?

Update: I just tried it, and the answer is, it depends. The main sites like this and the garden are listed, but most domains on the real internet aren't.

i consider the penryn Core 2 Duo and 1st and 2nd gen i3 old enough to be obsolete maybe not retro thou
gh simply put they arent powerfull enough to handle modern day tasks with modern software where as even a i7-940 can easily run most modern sites and office work with modern operating systems and software

a 32-bit 2006 Core Duo i consider to be retro same with any merom C2D and the reason for that is how obscure those chips were most people skipped over that generation and went to santa rosa or penryn from a pentium 4 or G4/G5

I mean, MacDomain is publicly accessible with a near complete feature set for public internet use, there's no real need to use the Vesper DNS in this situation, if you just want to use/test the features available.

There's a small subset of features available only to DNS users, but it's fairly niche, you either use it or you don't and it doesn't impact the overall experience for MacDomain.

I haven't marketed it a whole lot, mentions here and there sure - and some blurbs of my achievements, so I fully expect that people easily forget what each service offers. It's still in development so I don't publish a whole lot of the detailed changes, though I do update this website whenever I feel like I have something of value to contribute.

It's not a small project by any means for one person, but if there are questions and such, I'm here. Also, on AIM / ICQ (fogwraith / 10000) when online.

Yes, but E-Mail is still isolated, you can't mail *to* a real world address, nor can you mail *from* a real world address *to* an address hosted at MacDomain. If that's what you mean.

Other than that, sending and receiving works just like in the real world, minus the spam.

I recently found that macdomain is down. Is that permanent, or just temporary?

MacDomain retreated further into VesperNet, and has been rebranded Arc, so arc.net replaces macdomain.net/org and is also only available via VesperNet
