Those tiny screenshots look quite exciting if they're being served out to the web somehow!

Here we go, the cross-platform bridge (crossbridge) There are installation instructions, how to run the bridge and basic guides for emulators. This is a first public release, I'll be happy with any feedback, but no feedback is also feedback, that means that it's probably working out. Accounts The basic requirement is an account registered via MacDomain, cballero, snes1423, bolkonskij and knezzen has had their accounts updated with configuration options that supply a basic 56k connection with 1 static IP on the Vesper network. Once I see that things are working as intended, I will move on to the next steps, which include wrapping up the portal for this (currently not accessible to users), additional options (hopefully) PPPoE and VPN and more.

Some minor update notes, released version 1.1 and later 1.2 of the bridge today and an updated QEMU section in the emulators document. v1.1 fixed the immediate issue with connecting with MacPPP, lesson learned - don't overcomplicate things. v1.2 fixes random QEMU hard freezes / crashes when using pty/COMx directly, unix and tcp sockets appear to be a lot more stable (support for these two were added) Apart from that, big thanks to Europa for helping me test some of the stuff, especially the communication between users and a method I do not have access to myself, bridge on a host <> serial cable to Macintosh <> real Macintosh "dials" out to VesperNet. <> internets access Today was a great day.

It's been a joy to test! I'm having a blast playing with it. It's been fun getting my Performa online after the ethernet card seemingly stopped working. It's nice being online again!

I'm REALLY itching to give it a try, but have been coding SDL too much to have spare brain bandwidth. Hmm...my ancient macs are in a different room than my modern machines, and my REALLY modern ones don't have serial ports. Dealing with a usb rs232 adapter can be a pain I'd like to avoid. I'm going to have to think on how to get things together, other than a 30 foot rs232 cable that is! Probably a linux laptop that does have a serial port...I haven't used serial is so long, I don't even know which of my machines has it.

For a little fun, the screenshot below was taken on my Performa 450 connected over PPP, with the screenshot uploaded to the image host over PPP ![]() https://revontulet.org/2025/07/01/2841ef25827a4336aec04c872e78f52e.gif

Have fun, I look forward to it! Sadly posting from S7T Forums won't work directly on Netscape 3, but the image upload site does, so what I did was upload it to the site, send a link to the picture over Hotline, and then post from my modern machine with the picture link

Well...I got it all working. But couldn't quite login to s7t using netscape 3, which after showing some errors eventually crashed...so not posting from my ancient powerbook QUITE yet. Once I get all my accounts and whatnot, I'll post a screenshot.

Yeah, it seems that the lower end for accessing S7T through Netscape is Netscape 4.x, which is too demanding I think for my Performa with its 12MB of RAM. That being said, I wonder if there's a different browser that would fare better and still be usable on my system. I know fog has recommended Cyberdog to me, so I may have to try that sometime in the near future.

Are we talking about the "broken pipe" error that Netscape throws? Seems to be a NS specific problem with the handling of sessions IIRC. iCab works fine. I think Internet Explorer does as well, but I haven't run it. Personally, I use MacLynx for posting from my IIci. It works very well and fast, even on a lowly 68030 CPU.

Cyberdog is a very funky animal, built out of opendoc parts. Probably will have a pretty high memory requirement and not run well on m68k's, but worth trying at some point. I'll definitely give icab, ie and maclynx a try. Sounds like maclynx will be the one for my pb 180, once I get it online. I'm looking forward to posting here from all the various devices as I get them going. Going to get ppp for my pb 5300 today. It should be able to run better browsers than the pb 540.

Posted from pb 540 via vespernet after much teeth gnashing! The foggy wraith had to fix a dns to get past the "broken pipe" login error it seems..

A strange issue, but at least now we know where to look ![]() Pushed some pretty fun updates onto the server as well, a bit more tweaking required ... but the weekend is nearly here, plenty of time
