I had not realized that hotmail was still a usable email address. As Apple moved its email system from dotMac to dotMe to iCloud they kept all the old address alive making them just an alias(?) for the older addresses. I did have an old hotmail address, but did not use it very much or for very long. At some point I checked on it and it had been deleted.

It's more or less an entirely contained ecosystem, and a *very* ambitious project.

There are more topics on it over at http://vespernet.net , http://macdomain.net and http://fogwraith.macdomain.net

Where the latter is due for an update again, now that Gopher is officially supported over there.

I agree, this looks like what often has been mentioned missing for retro computers - all in one package. Neat! I need to register and test drive with my IIci and 7.1 as well :)

Nice, welcome, I'm fogwraith on AIM, though not there while at work :P

I'll be creating some additional nice-to-have things for the AIM / ICQ portion of the services that will be web-accessible.

It would be fairly easy to hook up and be made available, but at the moment I'm in the middle of writing an Archie server, already done with the WWW and Telnet side of things, focusing on supporting Archie clients now ;)

Another new feature that hasn't been overly advertised on the network is the fact that all users with access to web hosting, automagically has the ability to create their own gopherhole. (ooh, aah)

I don't know if KDX protocol has been documented to an extent where I would be comfortable enough to start working on a server implementation ;)

Archie is a bit of a stretch, but at least the source is available - though that doesn't make it less of a pain in the ass :P

I'm still using all my hotmail & yahoo addresses via stunnel4. But they keep changing stuff and so I notices, that my G-Mail accounts stopped working as of recent.

I would consider such a "Froggy" solution, if I could be sure it'll be available for at least a couple of years.

Nothing lasts forever, but if this is just a proof-of-concept thing or an experiment, then I would have to pass. I use my vintage Mac System for real work, as crazy as that sounds. So I require e-mail addresses that are here to stay for a while.

I think you can take fogwraith's excellent care of the Mac Garden for way over a decade as a "serious proof" that this isn't going to fold within a few weeks.

E-Mail, however, from what I understands only works *within* the realms of macdomain.net, much like e-mail works on a BBS. It's, unfortunately, no real replacement for e-mail providers. Given the regulatory and technical requirements these days on something seemingly simple like e-mail, I wonder if we're ever going to see it :-(

I think the most interesting parts as of now is the free Usenet access and webhosting. And also the Instant Messaging services. I think I'll give AIM / ICQ a try.
