Hello! I've been searching for it, but I'm unable to find anyone who has a replacement Performa 6116CD internal chassis.

Years ago, I purchased the machine from eBay and it came from a seller who packaged it really well, but there's really nothing they could have done for the internal chassis. It's the part that holds the drives, power LED, and speaker. It is extremely brittle, like even more so than Macs typically are nowadays. Kind of reminds me of the brittle iMac CRT plastics that are crumbling. I actually broke it more while disassembling the machine last night by lightly pushing on a part of it that I wasn't even interacting with! I feel like a 3D printable recreation would be great, but I lack a 3D printer (and the skills to create the part, which I wouldn't mind learning). Before I try to reinvent the wheel, does anyone have any suggestions on a replacement? Thanks

Since I am a woodworker, I would suggest get some thin modeling plywood (Baltic birch?) and make one with wood, using what is left of the crumbling plastic pieces as a template. You only need to create a replacement to handle the devices you have, which might simplify the task. I am not sure how much space you have to work with, it might also be possible to epoxy pieces of wood, or perhaps aluminum sheeting to reinforce crumbling plastic.

I have three 6100's (and/or equiv performas) and on all three all the plastics are deteriorating to various degrees.  Where edges haven't crumbled, parts of rails and posts are snapping off.  It could just be the age, or how the machines were treated or stored by their prior owners...but I'd be very hesitant, if I were you, to seek out an original "stock" replacement.  It's possible if it were stored in a good environment (air tight?) it might last, but it'd be a big gamble.

I really like @wove's solution, of creating a replacement.  Done carefully, you could screw the drives onto the wood, etc.  Although it might be a challenge finding material both strong and thin enough, and reinforcements might be needed also as he mentions.

@wove: Yeah, I need to make a new one, but I think I may want to make a 3D printed replica.  I scoured the thingaverse and people have recreated the drive sleds themselves, but not the internal chassis they mount to, sadly.

@laudland: I 100% agree. I don't think its worth finding an OEM part as I have heard this from you and others now.  I think these internal chassis are suffering from the same plague that happened to slot-loading iMac G3s' internal bezels, they are crumbling too, but sadly for those owners, these are holding the CRT!  I may shoot the people over at MacEffects a message since they seem to be into recreations of Mac parts (they've recreated the iMac G3's bezel, actually).

Thanks for the responses!

Good news, everyone!  Since my last post, I purchased a 3D printer and went to work!  I've successfully recreated the Power Macintosh 6100 internal chassis and uploaded the STL files here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6989132

It can be printed in 3 parts and screwed together with 3mm screws.  I thought I'd post an update to not leave anyone hanging!

I second that @DannyMac, those parts look great. I like the color, it adds a bit flair to the beige boxes. Thanks for sharing.

It's actually gorgeous!  I was expecting something primitive and all 90 degree angles, but it looks like you reproduced it practically perfectly, down to all the odd angles and curvy bits etc.  If my 6100 ever degenerates badly enough the bracket is no longer usable, I'd definitely print one of yours!  Great job!
