I've been playing around with a MacBook2,1 with a Core 2 Duo @ 2.16 GHz and 2 GB of RAM. I installed SeaLion, and it runs really nicely, and it's able to connect to my 5 GHz wifi router. It seems to show secure web pages just fine, and I just love how it feels. I would have loved to have one of these back then, and would have used it all these years. It has a clear acrylic cover for the bottom and top, and the battery is still like new. Got it totally free, because the owner was going to recycle it, and I took it home and formatted the hd, and installed 10.6.8 on it. I like the older look to it, the black plastic case. IIRC, it was released with 10.4 Tiger preinstalled on it. I really like SeaLion so far. |

Wow, that's a great find! Snow Leopard is still quiet useful unless you want to do the latest web stuff. Is SeaLion better than InterWeb these days? Not sure what are the recommended Snow Leo browsers in 2024. Given the popularity of this particular version, it's surprising we don't get any fanpages or blogs on it (as we used to have with Tiger)

Had that same MacBook for long while until I sold it last year. There was something about Snow Leopard on that machine that just felt right. I haven't used Snow Leopard in a while though. Maybe time to play around with it again. Can't say I've used SeaLion, but I've had great experience lately with Aquafox on my iMac G4. It is responsive, a bit faster to load - and it flies on the G5 I've revived in the cellar. snes123... my souped up 2006 Mini runs Antix Linux and I've loved the experience. Antix is fast, lightweight and can be tinkered with endlessly. I upgraded the Mini years ago to the T7600 CPU, Mini 2,1 firmware and 3 GB RAM. It's a pleasure to use.

Is that an older version of SeaLion? The latest version requires 10.7 Lion.

One slightly terrible thing to watch out for with the early polycarbonate and fiberglass body macbooks is the glue they used for the keyboards. It can...degrade(?)...after a bit and start to really stink. It can get bad enough they are unusable. It's been described as BO or melting crayons! Back in the day they were quite common at my local Goodwill, so I probably picked up at least six of them very cheap over time. Of those only two do NOT have the weird glue, and are some of my favorite machines. The others...two are sitting on a shelf in the hopes of doing SOMETHING about them one day. I took two others apart and tried a lot of different things soaking the keyboard in alcohol for days etc, but didn't have much luck. Took one keyboard COMPLETELY apart, peeling the plastic backing off, but still couldn't get the smell out. Anyway, I have one white one (that somehow has different glue) and one of the rarer black ones that I still regularly use. Put a relatively large SSD in one of them and have it triple booting with Win XP and Linux. The other dual boots with an old install of Windows 7 (that I can't update, nor safely connect to net of course) but has a version of Visual Studio I use for particular projects and to test compatibility. (And wistfully remember when Windows was more usable and pretty). Windows is, of course, a bit irritating with just one "mouse" button, and getting right clicks with taps working is "fun". I always heard the black ones were "more powerful". Don't know if that is true, as mine has the same cpu as the sole surviving white one. Both max out at 3g of ram...the controller can't see more. I love how easy it is to get to the ram and hard drive. Lion is usable as long as you don't push it too much, but Snow Leopard runs very well. So, just want to caution you...if yours starts the smell...there's sadly not much you can do about it.

@snes1423 yeah, I really liked Tiger. The one thing about Snow Leopard so far that I have to nitpick about is the little "lights"(?) under running applications in the dock. They're so hard to see. At first, right after I installed it, I couldn't tell which apps were running. It was very disorienting at first. I wish the marker was easier to see, instead of a bright dot against an already bright dock floor(?). The first OS X system I was exposed to was 10.3 Panther, which I also really loved. I haven't tried InterWeb. I always heard good things about Snow Leopard, but I'd never used it. Also, it always seemed kind of mystical to me, because of the white leopard. @mac-cellar I know what you mean about the feel. I love the texture of the plastic, and it feels sturdy. Also, the default font size of the menus and of most things in the UI is just right. I don't know how much this was used. On all of my keyboards and my Dell laptop that I've had since 2014, the most frequently used keys and locations on the wrist rests became shiny over time from repeated contact. I can't see any wear on this at all. However, there was some unsightly dust and stuff that got between the protective cover and the bezel, which I cleaned out the best I could. @wove It may be. It probably saved them a few cents per laptop they made, only to have that happen to an otherwise wonderful laptop later  SeaLion really feels and looks very much like PaleMoon browser. These are all descendants of Mozilla.
