so, I got a nice 2014 Lenovo 14" IdeaPad running Windows 11 however in my interest I would prefer to run system 7 with apps from 1994 under 7.1.2 with MacTCP is this possible on a Windows 11 PC with just an Intel Pentium CPU? also can I use original software 1.44 discs and Macintosh CD-ROMs on any build newer than 142?

I once tried it on my Win10 Virtual Machine - only to find out that it runs even less stable than the aging versions contained in most Linux repositories by default.

My advice here, too: download the most recent source and compile your own.

For just a complete package for Classic Mac emulation I recommend those found here. <https://mendelson.org/macos9win.html> The first package listed is OS 9 under SheepShaver, but further down the page are Basilisk packages for OS 7.6.1 and 8.

I have had excellent luck with them, although I go for the Mac OS packages I have tried the Windows packages and they run very well too. These were freshly compiled in Oct 23, so they are pretty recent. They all are able to print to pdf, print to the host printers, and share files via drag and drop with the host OS. They are quite versatile and they have good documentation.

@wove - Ah, thats a Windows 10+ specific app. Didn't know about those as they come with their own runtime engine. I am still an old fashioned binary executable guy when it comes to Windoze programs. ;)

In any case, the author promises to use the most recent (stable) B-II code. That's better than what most portable Basilisk-II setups for Win32 have to offer.

The modern Basilisk II builds can mount CDs, but they do not support mounting floppy disks at all (read or write), only floppy images.

If this situation has changed please let me know.

Otherwise AFAIK, only the now ancient build 142 by Lauri Pesonen, can read/write to 1.4MB floppy media. And if a PC has a SCSI card on board, access native HFS SCSI hard drives read/write and removables like Iomega Zip disks, SCSI CDR/CDRW, etc...

Pity support for this build was never carried further or across to other platforms...
