So, we have talked about usenet and newsgroups quite a bit the past weeks and I thought that it's about time to try to help each other with some tips on what newsgroups to check out.

Currently I'm subscribing to these:
comp.sys.mac.vintage
comp.sys.mac.system
comp.sys.atari.st

Let's keep going and help each other out! :)

comp.sys.apple2 is also quiet active (daily basis) if you're into Apple's Oldie.

Just stumbled on Feedbase, which is a RSS to Newsgroup converter if you'd like to call it that. Great if you want to keep your RSS and Newsgroups in one place, or want to reach RSS feeds from your System 6 Mac :)

The guy behind Feedbase is the same who's behind olduse.net. A time machine to say the least.

I've wanted to get setup to check out usenet but keep getting distracted by other projects.  Thanks for these - great starting points.

@psj20: It is quite easy. You need to use a Usenet Service Provider, plus software called a "News Reader" (or email or web software with newsgroup news-reading ability built-in).

See the "Anyone wanna try out Usenet on their System 7 Mac?" thread, for details.

If you want to have a laugh, or lose faith in humanity (depending on how you look at it) take a look at comp.sys.mac.advocacy.

I found a group called nl.eeuwig.september (eeuwig being Dutch for eternal ) referencing Eternal September.
This group is most obviously made for posting nonsense (all in Dutch) but it is fun to read every once in a while.

Personally, in addition to the ones Knezzen mentioned, I also follow these groups:
comp.sys.dec
comp.sys.ibm.ps2.hardware
comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.misc
nl.internet.usenet

These, however, don't see frequent posting.
One thing you have to be aware of: when using Eternal September (like I do), you often find your newsreader tells you there are no items in a group.
I believe this is down to retention, since they can't possibly sync everything from every source. Can't remember how long the retention is, put they publish it on their website.

OMG ... It has been a long time. Is comp.sys.alt.mac still active. That is where I,used to go many moons ago. I remember buying a 7100 and trying to move the video card over, but the processors were different. Some kind soul from Kentucky I believe telling this poor candian bush baby, living 250 miles below James Bay, to just reprogram the EPROM. Having no idea, I replied I guess I'll have to buy a new video card. Shortlymafter, I get an email with an attachement reading "Just run this and your video card will be good to go. I did and it was. We just had received internet like a month or two prior and I was on dial up. Instantly, I understood the power of the internet.
Old Fart's tales from the crypt. Enjoy.

haha, and we do enjoy. I think most of us remember these "magic moments" when we realized what the WWW could be. Of course, that was before the corporate take-over and heavy monetization.

I believe comp.sys.alt.mac is still there along with the other groups, I'll check next time when I connect. However, few groups are active anymore (I'm a regular in comp.sys.mac.vintage but it's been slow as well). Which is a true pity, because Usenet is actually such a wonderful platform to use with retro computers. It'd be the perfect forum that brings together owners of all different machines, be it Apple, Commodore or Atari. I don't know why it isn't more active.
