The site 6400zone is no more http://zone6400.com although it's on the wayback machine (internet archive ) its a shame it had lots of usefull info on it, it would be nice if it could be preserved somehow.

I made a Sherlock plugin for that side and noticed some time ago that it's not working like it should.

It's sad to see it go. A lot of useful information lost.

I agree, too bad. It was very nice and very specific (6400) which made it very valuable. I don't understand why people suddenly take these long-running pages down without notice but here we are.

The 6400zone hasn't been around for some time. The final official page grabbed by the WA was on May 22, 2022, last year.
http://web.archive.org/web/20220522165815/http://zone6400.com/

After this date it gets "parked" before finally disappearing.

It looks as though the last time the zone was actually updated was around 2008, so maybe the loss of interest from the site's maintainers and public became the main reason it faded away.

The zone's forum pages appear to have died completely sometime in 2013, and were finally closed in April, 2022.

The WA seems to have backed up a pretty good archive of the zone, so perhaps just using the WA to go back to zone pages from 2008 or 9 would deliver a fairly good coverage of what the zone had provided over those years.

Perhaps of interest: The downloads at the bottom of the home page (drivers, etc) appear to work OK.

Why the heck are even the wayback machine's webpages wrapped in SSL? What "secrets" are to be shielded there from preying eyes? :o

It is not a good thing to have old useful information go down and get lost. The site always kind of surprised me. I do not recall the PM6400 as being one of Apple's better efforts. I seem to recall it getting pretty poor reviews at the time. As I recall that was true of the whole x4xx line of PowerMacs. It did have a sub-woofer built in, which was kind of cool.

I read a few pages from that site and specially the GeoPort modem articles reminded me of how difficult it was to get peripherals on various interfaces to work & behave nicely, before the advert of USB.

Not something even a veteran like myself thinks about often, now that its all just "plug in and get to work with it". So yeah, this kind of info ought to be preserved.

It's just insanity. Luckily, in case of the IA you can just take away that s in https and it'll work as well. So kudos to them for spending at least some thought on it and letting the user choose his/her preference.

Ah, sorry about that. I was using a browser that forces https if it's available.

I rectified the links in my previous post to suit.

Don't be too surprised if a modern browser forces them to use https tho :-P

I thoroughly enjoyed my PM6400 tower, even mistakenly calling it a 6500 sometimes, not because I didn't know the difference, but because I knew a new one was out there (lol) :D and maybe it was just the simple way that I was using it at the time? but I never had any issues that I can recall..

In fact, that Mac was among my favorite pre-G3 PowerMacs :)

I could have sworn that it turned into some fishy gambling website at some time last year, after it went offline. Hmm.

In any case, it's sad to see more and more of these "old internet" pages go away. I missed this one while it was still up, but found it later and decided to check it out on archive.org. And hey, it's a pretty sweet page! Sad to see it go. I just have to wonder what the guy running it is up to nowadays...

The actual web server for zone6400.com is still online.

The easiest way to access it is to add some lines to your Hosts file like this:

74.208.236.49   zone6400.com
74.208.236.49   www.zone6400.com

Save the file, then try loading the site again. You should see The 6400 Zone.

Now would be the time to make a complete mirror of the site, as it's only a matter of time before it goes away for good.

Interesting! We should scrape it and host a mirror of it here on System 7 Today perhaps.
