so a bit unrelated here but I just wondered across bolkonskijs article he posted a link too and ima new owner of a late 2013 Mac Pro (6 cores and amd firepro d500 and 32gb of ram) and was wondering how I would get the same level of security as my trusty powerbook 1400cs/166 running the grand system 7.6.1 should I use Ventura or mavericks and if I use Ventura what should I do to make sure the NSA and all other letters of the government/wef/roosevelt-era agency alphabet soup (no google pun intended) stay out of my Mac

Again sorry if this was unrelated just wanted to ask about this to a more privacy centric/smaller group of people plus I enjoyed bolkonskijs article so thanks for that Seb' :D

Um...what article are you referencing? Maybe one from Cheapskate that I posted a link to?

I'm no security expert on modern Mac OS(X) but I dare say that one of the problems lies with the fact that you don't really control the machine anymore. You can't be sure what processes running in the background do and what applications exactly send stuff online and what not.

The best advice really is to avoid using modern Mac OS X after maybe around the Snow Leopard days, perhaps later. I'd rather use a lightweight Linux distribution on the machine like Lubuntu or any other depending on your needs.

@snes1423: Investing in Little Snitch probably wouldn't hurt.

You can download and try it out to see if you feel it's worth it.

Runs for 3 hours -restart as often as you like, until registered.

The downloads page has the latest version which runs on macOS Ventura, Monterey and Big Sur. The link to older versions for earlier Mac OSs is also found on that downloads page.

Yep, sneak.berlin is a good read. I note the aside:

Quote from: Jeffery Paul - sneak.berlin:
"I can’t recommend Little Snitch enough. It’s literally the first software I install (via USB) on a fresh macOS, before I even enable Wi-Fi or plug in a network cable.
Basically, same goes for me with any modern Mac OS (and I'm not running anything newer than Snow Leopard).
