I have a bunch of G3 and G4 Macs, but also a Power Mac 8600 that I'd like to get running with 7.6.1. This forum has been very helpful so far, so I thought I'd better sign up. Glad to be here, and thanks to all the folks who keep the site running. One of the best resources for old Macs! |

Welcome to S7T, 7Heaven! Your 8600 is a wonderful machine. I know, because I also have one :-) (a 8600/200). @Knezzen also has a 8600 and we both happily run the speedy 7.6.1 on it :-) We're a friendly little community here, so don't hold back if you have a question or want to add a comment. Do you have specific plans for the 8600 or is it just a matter of getting Mac OS 7.6 to run on it and play around with it?

But the 8600 is enormous :-) The 8500 is pretty similar technically. And it fits on my shelf!e

Wikipedia claims that Apple manufactured the 8600 only for 1 year. Even in IT that's a short lifespan. Why that?

Not sure it being enormous ... it's not small, but not bigger than other tower computers from the time. Much like e.g. a G3 Tower. If you want an enormous Mac, look for a Quadra 950 :-) I think the 8600 was only produced for a year due to the G3 CPU being ready. It was the time when his Steveness returned and PowerPC development was at its pinnacle, with new chips coming out every few months. What I love about the 8600 is that it's still "old-style Apple" in many ways yet with the faster speed and modern comfort. Compare changing a RAM module in a 8600 and a Quadra 800 and you know what I mean ...

Thanks everyone. I do like the 8600 and I'm thinking of a dual boot 7.6.1 and 9.1 setup. My interest is mostly with music production, and I look forward to seeing what software was/is available under 7. I have a few other OS9 machines, so I'd like to keep that connection. Still working through some issues with it, but I'll post about those in the appropriate forum.

My son started doing music production on a IIFX, moved on the 8600 and is now using a Gigabit Ethernet, which I think is running system 9. Music production software is resource intensive and very expensive. It is an area where you find older machines still in regular use. Once you get a fast machine with expensive software and a very steep learning curve up and running smoothly and efficiently you tend to just stick with it. Clearly being a case of "if it ain't broke; don't fix it." My son uses Protools for his software. He paid a fortune for the software, but he has been using it over 20 years now, so it was a worthwhile investment. Protools use to have an old version of their software available for a free to use, free of cost download.

Welcome aboard 7heaven! Interesting i may need your help then. I have my se/30 plugged through macmidi, roland sound canvus, roland e300 keyboard, running cubase 1.1 but I’ve not managed to make anything yet. I don’t know how to drag and drop pre defined instruments into the channels. I know nothing about DAWs so a complete noobie. So interested to see how you get on. Neal
