Our dear Cashed and me teamed up for a new retro Mac related project that we just launched: Mac Mod Paradise.

It's a retro-compatible website that puts its focus entirely on modding for old Mac OS games. Y'know, the user-created stuff? New maps for Warcraft II, scenarios for Colonization, new set of opponents for Hearts Deluxe and the like. Essentially we help breathing new life into your old classics :-)

The URL for our System 7 browser compatible page is:

http://mac.mod-paradise.com

There isn't a plethora of mods for the launch, because we want to make sure we only add stuff that is working quality material.

And guess what, it that takes time to make sure of that. Hence, we'd be delighted to get other hobbyists on board volunteering to help testing and cataloging new and old game mods. Anyone interested? :-)

What do you think of the project? Is that something that would be interesting to any of you?

Ditto! Mod gaming is new to me, we'll see if I get into it since it does sound like fun but I tend to go for very simple, old-school gaming :) (not that this isn't old-school, too! lol) ;)

Part of the fun should be to create *new* stuff for old games. A distinct hope we have is that people will start creating stuff for our old games again. Like doing cool hacks (e.g. color hacks on b&w games, sound hacks) and adding content so these classics will be worth enjoying a second time.

You know, the whole "being a creator instead of a consumer" thing we keep talking about here :-)

I'm slowly climbing that ladder, Bj ;)

Like looking for low-hanging fruit with the 68k software ideas that even got one of our old-time programmers to jump on them for a minute (God bless him for trying!) :), pointing-out how to fix emulation challenges like that networking impasse I had like forever.. so much so I ended making a tutorial on it, stuff like that (to start-off with at least)

Little things like getting AIM running online again was empowering because so many could relive the glory days of instant messaging (well, more the way I did when it came onto the scene); ultimately, I'd love to have an AIM-like program that could work with other platforms, I mean like send images and sound and such :D that's why when that other messaging app closed shop I got right on it to share, because it had a 68k component that talks to other platforms, much like VNC. Could you imagine having a instant messenger built-into a VNC program that could also have a webdav component?

But boy, we've really made some strides here and there, like discovering all of MPEGDEC's little secrets or sharing the color toolbar on Word 5.1a and so many other such hacks! lol :)

That's the kind of amazing projects I envision could be done with our beloved old Macs, both with real hardware (for the full experience) and in emulation (for those who could otherwise not afford to pay-to-play, so to speak). Eventually, I see them getting their hands on the real gear, but very detailed recapping videos would then be needed to properly maintain and revive old hardware.

The gaming mods feel like the 'next-level', which still needs some much-needed attention and I can definitely cheer from the sidelines! :D

I think I have my Mac desires spread out too thin (mostly because I've hit major walls of lack of knowledge); I've yet to accomplish (seemingly) simple feats, like getting my three first-gen Mac Minis to boot with the re-engineered OS 9 install disk, or manage to encode with Cinepak Pro (that's one of the main things my Mac Mini G4s were going to be used for) :(

I’m a bit like you Cballero, I’m learning new bits all the time, this area is new to me too. I’ve had a bit of a play, will try and re-focus in the new year and schedule times of the week to set projects as i’m trying to do 4-5 things but without the structure i’m achieving little. This is a great project that will help us all in the long run.

What is overwhelming for Cashed and me is the sheer amount of stuff we dig up. We only want to link stuff that we know 100% works and is quality content. So to sift through those archives and test the mods takes a lot of evenings.

There's certain games I've never played and don't particularly like the genre, so I feel I'd be a bad advisor on what is good and pushes a game's capabilities. If any of you are old comrades with a certain Mac OS game and got some time for testing, please let me know.

Aha! That's some excellent feedback! :)

What genres are your forte then? I mean, the start of things can begin with what you have a passion for first. Others who share the same genre passion (and even a few that initially don't, lol) could also jump in because of the genuine excitement felt in the project. I always (and will always continue to cheer) all of these efforts because 1) they deserve those accolades and 2) the only other reward to be received is the outcome of the project itself, you know?

I cheer our pal m68k because he's crazy in pushing the envelope in 68k emulation and has both pursued and gone far more in that arena than I've seen. His chosen Classic Mac era is also comparable to my entry into Mac, which started in System 6 in school, which quickly jumped into System 7, then the PowerPC transition in '94, still under System 7.

Funny enough, Mac OS 8 didn't arrive until months after the last 68k Mac, the Powerbook 190, was discontinued. The rest of the story was PPC Macs up to Mac OS 9, which gave us some of the most powerful Classic Macs. I've been wanting an Android-friendly PPC emulator like SheepShaver or QEMU, but ARM doesn't seem to have the muscle to deliver and Chrome OS makes it almost impossible so 68k Mac emulation will continue to get attention, at least from us lol.

So back to the topic, it's more about flaming the passion to keep the momentum, with room to let others pick up the other genres. My gaming was made up of the real old ones in all categories, so I'd/we'd have to be introduced to them a little more I think.

As you can see from the selection of currently available mods on the page, I'm a beer & pretzels type of gamer. Strategy games, RPGs, adventures, simulations. Not so much action games / shooters. That's what Cashed likes, but the man has a near full-time job as a web-detective for digging up the good stuff :-D

If you'd like to test mod stuff for early 90's stuff, I've got something for you. For example, We're looking for someone who has played Larry Bond's Harpoon in the past?

We're also looking for someone to test Lode-Runner Returns levels. I'd have to check but I think our archive also has stuff for the original mid 80's Lode Runner.

Or for john calhoun's Glider 4. And, of course, Wolfenstein 3D.
