Greetings. I have seen the 2020 patch for OS 7.6. Does anyone know if it will also patch OS 8? |

Hi macdude, OS 8.1 or 8.6 ? If 8.1 I'd think it should work fine, as 7.6 and 8.1 share a lot. But I haven't tried it because of a lack of a Mac OS 8 System. Our dear member 68040 runs a 8.1, so he might be able to answer your question. In the end, it's just an extension that you place in the respective folder. So I'd simply give it a try and you'll see if it works or not

Don't apply a patch for a lower OpSys version to a higher one. You might actually cause a regression. I am using 8.1 heavilly and *never* had any Y2K or 2020 problem. I am running MacOS on B-II where the clock of the guestOS is hardwired to the host's clock. The HW on physical Macs running 8.1 has some limitation requiring an OpSys specific(!) patch sometime after 2030. But please always verify you have the correct version when applying OpSys patches.

I'd rather opt for giving it a try. The worst thing that can happen is that your machine will lock up during or after boot. In that case, press and hold the SHIFT key during the boot sequence, which disables the extensions and gives you a "bare bones system". It would then allow you to move the 2020 patch out of the extension folder again and happily reboot.

From http://mactcp.net/macos2020.html "System 7.1 to Mac OS 8.6 The Date & Time control panel on System 7.1 and later is limited to a range of 1920 to 2019 by an operating system function called ToggleDate. I have created an extension that installs a patch that changes that range to 1941 to 2040, just drag the patch to the System Folder and restart the computer." It works fine, unlike the SetDate utility...n

Macintosh Y2020 (and how we get to 2040). In brief: Quote from: The Long View: "Macintosh clock time expires at 06:28:16 GMT Monday February 6, 2040. That’s going to be a problem for users of the old Macintosh, but it is a problem for 20 years from now. Fixing that will be possible, but it will require some deeper cutting than we need to do now. The problem now is just setting the clock."(meaning the 2020 patch).

I once found a patch with a similar description but it said it was strictly for System 7. In any case, I never installed that on B-II and my clock and calendar function flawlessly w/o it. But as I wrote, this might be related to the actual clock hardware and not so much the operating system. In which case emulators might not be affected by it. (and by 2040 I'll be too senile to care anyway)

Ikr? But I do believe that Basilisk II corrects the system's default by pairing it up with the host's own, a built-in patch of sorts, but mine's the same way with System 7.x and Mac OS 8.1!

B-II auto-syncs the guest clock with the host's one. But no further "patching" is done to the operating system. In any case, my calendar works just fine (back & forth), so I strongly suspect its some Y2K kind of problem with the HW clock in older Macs.
