Hi, maybe this will be of some interest here. I've set up a Gopher server on my emulated System 7.5.3. It was already serving a HTTP site, but I've also "updated" this one to be browsable on iCab 2.9. You may point your Gopher client (Lynx or MacLynx are best) here : gopher://galgot.hd.free.fr Main content is documenting how Iv'e set up the thing, as I had not idea what else to put in there ... Some things don't work properly yet in the Links "page", NetPresenz is very picky with HTTP links, Have to figure out how to make this work. But after throughout testing, I find other things run pretty well. Documenting is almost done, still have to finish the NetPresenz part, hope it can be interesting. Doing ASCII art was the fun part of this... The HTTP website address is : http://galgot.hd.free.fr Not much change from the previous one, You can make a screenshot of the server, there is now a link to the Gopher hole, and few Mac related links added. |

Thanks for that gopher site. It was a delight to visit. Gopher was developed at the University of Minnesota, my home state. "Go Gophers" Gopher predates the web and was one heck of a great information source in its day. I suppose its big failure was there is no part of its structure that can be easily commercialized. n the days of 300-2400 baud modems it was a fast efficient way to find useful information. I briefly checked the Apple App store but could not find any gopher client. Oddly however there is an excellent gopher client for the iPad aptly named "Gopher Client." I very much enjoyed visiting galgot.hd.free.fr and shall return. Thanks for putting it together.

Glad you enjoyed the visit Wove. Like "Web 1.0" websites for old computer, there is also renewed interest for Gopher . Check out C.Kaiser's Gopher at Floodgap.com, where he list all new Gopher holes around : gopher://gopher.floodgap.com:70/1/new There is even a Gopher search engine. And thanks, didn't know there was a gopher client for iPad !

This is absolutely of interest, great post! I missed the whole gopher craze but I in a way it's very much like the old web, without the "commerce potential" that @wove mentioned. No ads, no porn :-) @wove you used gopher when it was new and hot? care to tell a bit how and for what you used it? What places did you frequent? What hardware was involved etc. Always eager to hear from the pioneering days ![]() Just visited your little gopher hole @galgot, I love it! Thanks for the detailed article on how to set up this, maybe this inspires someone to set up his own gopherspace! You should add a section about yourself, in the spirit of a personal 'net of people, not corporations ... :-) Been using TurboGopher btw, which has been my go-to gopher client for many years. Any good reason to pick Lynx/MacLynx over it? How about compiling a list of interesting gopher holes? I recall there's even a way to access Wikipedia via Gopher? What makes Gopher really great is that you can use it even with very old Macs like my old SE for example!

Yes Wikipedai is accessible via gopher. gopherpedia.com:70/1/ I did find a gopher client for OS X. It is written by Kaiser and is called Gophie. It is available for OS X. and Windows via a dmg and exe. The source is listed and it can be compiled to run under Linux. Kaiser at floodgate has always been interested in gopher. I first came across his work via a gopher client for the Commodore 64. Before Classila and TenFourFox etc he developed software for the Commodore 64. Gopher for me was a very nice bridge between BBSes and The Web. My first online experiences were logging on to a remote Unix machine using DesTerm on the Commodore and accessing online resources via a terminal from there. Gopher was huge at that point.

Hi @Bolkonskij ! I specified Lynx/MacLynx cause I know on these the ASCIIs are not messed up at least. Someone (DroneCatcher on MacRumor) showed me the page in TurboGopher, and the spaces didn't show, was all readable but all "page" layout was messed up. But if it worked for you , all fine ![]() Some earlier WWW browsers could browse Gopher too, like IE... But I find MacLynx on a System 7 is the best for it, note if you have GraphicConverter installed, it even open images linked in the gopher hole with it. Very cool. Sure , now that I've been working on it , I have other ideas of things to add, like maybe my fav Mac OS apps with links to their pages on the MacGarden. Note there are already 3 Figlets MacOS apps to download in the Files section. One can even browse Hackers News in Gopher : gopher://hngopher.com:70/1/

And I thought the Gopher is an endangered species.
