Norm's (my 8600/200) PSU died two days ago. Wouldn't do a thing upon touching that power button anymore :-( I was thinking about how unexpected such things usually happen. Luckily, it has a SCSI2SD for storage, so it's merely a thing of taking out the SD card to get to the files stored. Still, I wish I had a recent backup on my MDD. I usually just copy the 4 GB of data from the 8600 to my MDD via my home network. No dedicated backup software. Unfortunately, since my MDD was in for a preventive recap I don't have a recent backup. It's always like that, isn't it? How do you guys handle the issue? Do you backup your System 7 machines? Or simply re-install everything anew if a harddisk / card fails? |

I backup my entire system of course - religiously. What you don't backup today you will loose tomorrow!

Do you think it just needs to be recapped?

Not sure what "Recapped" means, but I use Retrospect and it saved my bacon more than once.

Recapped, as in replacing the capacitors.

I remember Bolkonskij saying he sent his PSU to be recapped recently so I'm wondering why it died suddenly.

Well, back in them days I used to "cure" entire motherboards by replacing all capacitors on them I could get my soldering iron on. Most likely not all those little critters deserved that cruel treatment, but once I had identified one but guy I just couldn't stop myself ;-) But ever since they introduced SMD devices and computer cases that are more tightly shut than a virgin in an orthodox cloister, I placed my trusty old hot finger in some drawer and never had it see the light of day again. St. Lead may forgive me for that - but the great flux capacitor surely won't. ;-)

I'm fortunate to have aquired Retrospect (Network server version) and a couple of DDS(DAT) tape drives. I like Retrospect. It can be automated to run at specific times, although I just use it whenever I want. A few clicks and off it goes. It backs up any machines that are on my LAN at that time, and I've set it to only do files that have changed since the last back-up. Retrospect's catalog keeps tabs on which files were on which machine, at which time, and on what tape they are stored on (the library of tapes just keeps growing). You can restore individual files or the contents of a whole hard drive to exactly the same state it was at a back-up. Get Info comments are lost though. Difficult to recommend DDS drives though - they seem unreliable, and slow. A restore of a whole hard drive when the files are spread across several tapes is a really tedious operation. But at least I got my files back! Oh, and on the subject of capacitors, I've twice changed them in external drive PSUs, and also had a go with a motherboard. It made absolutely no difference whatsoever - dead before, dead after. I'm not bothering with that anymore....††

@Syntho - I've got my MDD's PSU and CPU card safely back home and am happy to report that it works like the first day. All issues gone. Awesome. Cornica will soon receive its next update :-) Norm's PSU is still on the to do list. I just figured that when it wouldn't power on it was a good moment to take the PSU to recap anyway. Now I'm on OS9(.2.2) and miss the clean interface of my 7.6 install

I back up my important systems (daily drivers). Right now my PowerMac G4 MDD and my MacBook Air M1. Everything else mostly has stuff running that I can find on the garden and the files mostly comes from the MDD.
