What is a good internet streaming application for OS 7? Since most OS 7 era systems have small hard drives internet streaming would reduce the number of songs that would have to be stored on the hard drive to enjoy mulitple genre of music. I know you could just take a bunch of cd's and listen to them, but less to carry around. |

I don't believe I've ever even attempted to do such a thing. Will QuickTime 5 not do this?

I don't believe so. I have used real player with OS 8.6 and it works. ShoutCasts are free Internet Streaming Stations. The extension of (*.pls). It is only built into to iTunes version 2 and above for apple products. Just wanted to know if there is a System 7 application that will do this. I think RealPlayer 7 is the latest that can be used with Mac OS 7.6.1

This is a little late but I've been able to play streaming audio from shoutcast using the free app MpegDec. Just download the m3u file, drag it into the gray box above the buttons and press play. It is not the best looking player but it is the only one I've found that works on 7.5.5. You can find it at http://www.jwgdesign.com/mpegdec/

Can this be done with SoundJam? I'd try it, if I knew where to find streaming MP3s.

I know QT did this on 8.6 with my 6116 performa, as I had a streaming Mp3 server at my college network. I dont know if it works with system 7 though, didnt ever need to try. Try it first with QT. Drag the m3u file to quicktime and see if it will play it. You may have to save the m3u file and manually open it with QT. b

I have done some reasearch and also found that mpeg dec works. A good place to go to get streaming files is shout cast. I think they are a *.pls file. All you have to do is control click in Mac OS 8.6 or OS X and you can dowload the file with that extension. It works with itunes, real player and mpegdec. Once you find a internet radio station you like. I use it because when you want to listen to a certain kind of music, they play othe songs for you. Also , on a small hard drive you only have so much room for mp3's.

In Mac OS 7, to "right click" on a link or something in IE, hold down the mouse button for several seconds and the contextual menu will appear.

MpegDec will certainly work to play internet radio stations. At least the ones that use the MP3 format. Shoutcast and Live365 stations work just fine with MpegDec. MpegDec's biggest claim to fame is that it works on 68k Macs. I know this because I helped on the MpegDec project. Mark White did all the real work porting MPEGDEC from Amiga to Mac, but I helped with creating an icon set, the web site, and doing plenty of beta testing. PLS and M3U files are simply text files with one or more URLs in them. Quite a few iTunes Radio Stations are from Live365. Just Get Info on it in iTunes, and it will show you the URL. Unfortunately, that particular address only works in iTunes, but most stations can be found by searching the Live365 web site. There is also a directory of streams at IceCast.org. The Official MpegDec for Mac Web Site: > http://www.jwgdesign.com/mpegdec Enjoy. John
