What are the options for movies & tv in the 7/8/9-series? Working combos of hardware and software? Is there a suitable (older, because of the drivers?) pci tv I could use in my 7500 G3? Then have a digital to analog gizmo between that and the antenna plug? and in between somewhere a dvd-player? Could I use a scsi dvd-player or would I need a regular household one? Can the 7.6.1 handle dvd? I would really like to control everything from the mac, and not just use the monitor while bypassing the computer. Whatta if I would like to watch a movie on the road in my pb 1400? Could it run anything with only 183 Mhz and 48 MB ram? I could compress the movie in a B&W 450Mhz with 768 MB ram, but with what software? (I did saw the other thread, but I would like to make a fully working combo here, and eat the cake too). So movielovers, any concrete ideas? |

Firstly, all software is QuickTime. QuickTime Player (System 7 Today offers Movie Player, which was the official player before version 3 that did not require payment to watch full screen). There is no DVD solution that I know of as of yet. 1400s will not play movies full screen, and need a fairly crappy codec/compression combo to play movies at all. PCI Macs obviously have no limits in this area as you can install all sorts of fast QuickTime decoders. Also, there are many systems with built in TV-Tuners that hook directly to your home cable, such as the 6300, 6400, 6500, almost all of the 5x00s, and a few 68040 systems.

Thanks Dan, you saved a lot of my time. I've been looking a bit for a 5500, after rebuilding an i-mac G3 for a friend. (Faster motherboard/cpu, dvd, muchos ram, a big HD. Kind of proud of that one). But not sure if there's room enough for a mac more.
