I found it on Cornica. Thanks Bolkonskij for the link. I love how you can filter out https results!!! And it's so lightweight and snappy. This is a great improvement to my quality of life. Thank you for the recommendation! |

I have trouble with wiby.org search. It seems no matter what search string I type in I end up with the same odd ball set of results to sites I do not recognize and have nothing at all to do with my search query. I am going to have to keep trying.

Oh, wait. You didn't know wiby.org? Wow! I've been spreading the word about it ever since I ran into it (3? 4?) years ago. I love it! It so much reminds me of the Google & others of the early 2000s. The websites you find are ad-free, mostly uncommercial and created by people for people. Yes, wove. That's early 2000's search engines for you :-) truth to be told, I find it has gotten a lot better in recent times. I think it has to do with more pages getting submitted and the index slowly but steadily growing. (every time I run into a page that would fit in but isn't there, I use the submit page to get it added. This works reasonably well!. I wish there was a language filter but you can't have all, I suppose :-) What I can recommend @ShinobiKenobi - grab your favorite beverage and then use the "Surprise Me..." link on the main page. You'll be delivered a random website and while you certainly will run into a few duds, you'll also find interesting stuff, stuff you never *knew* you'd want to read. That's the early web magic for me. The whole exploration / discovery thing that Google killed so successfully.

Thanks for the explanation. I did not know that wiby.org is built via submissions. That explains why searching population densities during the neolithic returns nonsense.  I will keep it in mind when I search for information on old tech. However for old Mac tech I rely very much on info from System7Today!

I must agree with @Bolkonskij on the 'Surprise me' button. Many an evening have I spent (sometimes awestruck) reading and clicking through whatever Wiby served up. Pages dedicated to Sailor Moon are a recurring theme, I can tell you.  I also agree with @Bolkonskij's observation of it feeling very familiar (both look & feel as actual usage) to early Google. Glad to see another soul discovering wiby.org!

wiby feels like a way to fight back against the over-commercialized-big-tech-walled-garden internet. If we get enough people to use wiby and to perhaps even set up their own little website and submit it, we'll get "our own net within the net".
