Hey everyone, I’m working on a new CNC project and considering using a NEMA 34 stepper motor for the motion system. I’ve done some research, but I’m still a bit unsure about a few things and would love some advice from the community. Here’s what I know so far: NEMA 34 just refers to the faceplate size (3.4 inches), not torque or power output. These motors typically offer higher torque compared to NEMA 23, which seems perfect for heavier loads or larger gantries. They usually require higher current drivers, so I’ll need to match my stepper driver and power supply carefully. Here’s what I’d like to know from you guys: Torque vs. Speed: How do NEMA 34 steppers perform at higher speeds compared to NEMA 23? Is there a significant drop-off in usable torque? Power Supply: For a typical 4A NEMA 34 stepper, what voltage do you recommend to get smooth performance without overheating? Applications: For CNC routers or plasma tables, is NEMA 34 overkill or just right for reliability and precision? Any recommendations for reliable brands or driver pairings (e.g., Leadshine, Gecko, etc.) would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance — looking forward to learning from your experience! |

Hey @max22 Thanks for the this question, and welcome to S7T. CNC technology has always fascinated me, and I often watch projects. I personally don’t have any first hand experience with CNC myself, but I always do an in depth research before buying anything for my own projects -so I getcha 100% Have you already seen this thread on the MYCNCUK forums? -> Nema 34 upgrade issues That said -there must be the perfect setup out there. I’ll gladly assist, if search results on MYCNCUK turns up empty.

Update You are not alone in finding the right one. Corvetteguy50 may have the answers. You can have the best of both worlds -converting a Nema 23 to a Nema 34. ->Stepper Motor Adapters From Nema 23 to Nema 34 ->Let’s Go CNC Shopping… So You Don’t Get Ripped Off!
