I don’t have it set to turn on, yet after an hour powered off it will turn itself on again. Faulty power switch maybe?

Yes, I would very much suspect the PSU. Does it otherwise run well? No sudden unexplainable crashes?

Unfortunately, the PSUs used in the 8600s aren't easy to work on. I wonder what ATX-Mod options there are ...

That is a odd one!  Have you timed it and is it always around the same amount of time?  Does it turn on randomly other times, or is it always around an hour after you turn it off?

My 8600 did the same thing. At some point after turning it off, it would just start up again. Searching about forthe causes, one finds that it is something of a common problem, occurring on lots of PowerMacs. I was never able to figure out the cause and correct it. I ended up just plugging it into a power strip and then after shutting it down I simply turned off the power strip.

I never found anything in the settings that corrected the problem and while a problem with the power supply would seem to be a likely cause, my checking through the power supply did not turn up anything that appeared to be a flaw or defect.

Mine ran for a good solid decade like that so whatever causes the restarting does not seem to be something that causes an eventual failure of the machine. I eventually sold the machine, letting the buyer know the issue. I never did hear anything back.

The PowerMac 8600 is probably my favorite Mac. It was very reliable, very capable, quite powerful. I had the last MachV model and did a lot of video transcoding on the machine, converting VHS tapes to digital. The MachV models shipped and required System 7.6.1. Using XPostFacto the 8600 can run up to OS X Tiger. It is a truly delightful machine to use and work on.

Hi all,
I think the timing is quite random. I turned it off to time it today and in the next minute it turned itself back on. Other than that the machine seems to work perfectly. I have it sharing a drive via AppleTalk to a beige G3 running OS 8. This 8600/200 is running OS 7.6.1. It does lock up but only when I’m running certain open applications. I leave it idling all day and it’s always ready to go.
