OS 9 SheepShaver runs beautifully on my Chromebook! I followed instructions for setting-up Wine for Chrome OS then installed the SheepShaver version that runs inside of MacOS9.exe (modern browser links) Wine https://alvarotrigo.com/blog/wine-chromebook OS 9 https://mendelson.org/macos9win.html I had to setup Wine to emualate Win 10 and it only runs by locating the exe file using a Linux file manager and showing hidden items! Running a PPC OS and OS 9 on Chrome OS has been a huge goal for me and I finally put those pieces together thanks to the Wine folks and Edward Mendelson for encapsulating a fully setup Windows version of SheepShaver running OS 9.0.4! ![]() Now I'm excited to see how PPC FileMaker versions compare to FMP 4; my runtime version of my little database runs smooth as butter on it as did Classila which comes preinstalled along with a bunch of other neat apps

Very nice! That's not System 7 but its overweight cousin, but still, it's Mac OS :-) ... and emulating later incarnations can be a cumbersome endeavor, from what I understand. How's stuff like graphics acceleration in emulation on modern gear? Can it do things like Unreal Tournament?

That is interesting. That is the Sheepshaver package that I have linked to via a Columbia.edu link. I see that that link from Columbia now automatically re-diredts to the new site. But, yes that is an excellent Sheepshaver setup. He has also been updating the setup over time. His package for Basilisk is also excellent and does the 68k and 7.6.1. I enjoy the integration it provides to the host system and the print to pdf that can also save to the host as well as printing right to the host printer. That package is also available for folks using a newer Mac (Catalina or better). I personally do nothing that would make use of graphics acceleration. One thing that does amaze me is the network speed in the emulator. During my time with the Classic Mac OS I was always on a dial up network connection and I am flabbergasted watching a 20meg download from the garden come through on Cyberdog in the blink of an eye. Not to mention that gopher can get and display information as fast as if it were being pulled from my hard drive.

It's fun to post from Clasilla! I want to see how I might be able to jimmy this thing to run the PowerPC versions 7.6.1 with HFS+ and Mac OS 8.1 of course, which I really like due to it's desktop GUIness like button view and spring loaded folders ![]() But from what I recall, MTT's cool Mac OS 7.6.1/System 7.1.2 combo System Folder could (possibly?) run on SheepShaver since 7.1.2 boots on PM 6100-8100 Macs, although SS claims it only boots as of 7.5.2, which seems so close to 7.1.2, the very first PowerMacs and that's SheepShaver's emulation platform. However, since that unofficial boot System Folder is a mix of 7.6.1 and System 7 Pro (and should be PPC bootable, IIRC?), it may be a winner as well? ![]() Bottom line, this has jsut opened a huge world of opportunities for emulation for those who run Chrome OS! Also, I now get to enjoy A-Dock and a few other of my go-to GUI elements missing in System 7/Mac OS 8.1

That was 7.1.1 with a newer Finder up to a 7.6.1 Finder, and 68k only I would think would be possible there .Of the early PPC OSs I've used in the past (not only on Sheep) I always felt that 7.5.3 was the first really stable PPC Mac OS, so I was happy enough with leaving it at that limit. With Sheep I tend to run Mac OS 7.6.1 and 8.1 mainly, and anything else it can run, I use less frequently. Congrats for getting Sheep to run on your Chromebook. Grab an old-world ROM and take 7 something for a spin

I know, right? granted, I've always loved pushing limits and boaundaries, even if it's a pain sorting through the seemlingly infinite mess to get there, like it was getting SheepShaver to finally cooperate with Chrome and yes, my two early-Mac faves have always been the last Mac OS 7 and the second Mac OS version for 8; the HFS+ on 7.6.1 addition is just a huge cherry on top of Mac OS 7!System 7 Pro is one of my faves if only because I worked with it a lot. It was really solid on older 68k Macs so it's mostly nostalgia for me; I know it should stay within the 68k realm (plus there was a tiny little hack to make file copying faster on that particular OS group that broke when 7.5 arrived, lol) you could say I listened a bit to Gamba on that version! ![]() http://web.archive.org/web/20190227110601id_/http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/index.html

@Bolkonskij: I crawl to the finish line with most of my emulation adventures but at some point I will test out its oomph (possibly if benchmark programs run in emulation?) then that might be worth a try.I'm still aiming for as much connectivity and productivity first, then do a little gaming I do love playing old Mac, arcade and nes favorites and such, but I envision that happening a little further down the road; don't want to get sidetracked having too much fun now! they would be my kryptonite right now! lol, but I may try one just to compare with my Basilisk emu speed; it crawls on BII.Update: installed FMP6 on both my G3 Macs and SheepShaver and while I cannot access a file shared in SS, I can if I share it from my real Macs! (now to find a way to fix that limitation on SS!)
