So, is there any reason that this Radeon driver wouldn't work with the original "Radeon Mac Edition" card that came before the Radeon 7000? The "Mac Edition" was supposedly faster than the 7000....

Thanks!!

I put a big quote around "supposedly" since no original Radeon had 64mb of memory like the 7000s do.

And I quote....

"....the Radeon 7000 Mac Edition's performance lies somewhere between ATI's own RAGE 128 and its Radeon Mac Edition graphics cards. Unlike the Radeon Mac Edition, the 7000 lacks hardware transform and lighting capabilities, which gives newer 3D games a big edge."

I'm not sure how big of a deal this is, but I have always read in newsgroups about this subject that the original Radeon was a better card than the 7000 which followed it.

You can read the full review here....

:)

P.S.  Sounds like a good project for you to pursue...you can purchase a Radeon Mac Edition and perform tests against the 7000 then report back to the Forum for the good of all Mackind!!!

The original Radeon Mac Edition is more than a match for the 7000. Bare Feats did a nice little comparison on the available ATI PCI cards from the Rage 128 thru Radeon 9200. The 9200 definitly reins supreme, but the Radeon Mac Edition is a strong #2.

They are a lot harder to come by than the 7000 however.

True.  But Radeon 7000s are available with more memory.

I'm curious what software uses more than 32 megabytes of video memory under system 7.6?  I know that a lot of 3d accelerated games do nowadays, but I cannot think of any advantage that you would gain by having a Radeon 7000 over a Radeon Mac Edition on a machine that is running 7.6?

Rune for one... I would imagine others.  The more vram the better because the less disk storing and compressing the image files a game will require.

Well, I guess you're looking at a trade-off. The original Radeon has more features built into the hardware (like transform and lighting and maybe more render pipelines) where as you can get the 7000 with 64MB VRAM. To grossly over simplify it, I guess you're looking at better performance in T&L versus better performance from less texture swapping.

While apps that would use up more than 32MB VRAM under System 7 may be rare, I guess they are probably more common than apps that would make use of advanced T&L. True?

I would imagine so.  However, both cards would be excellent choices for OS 7.  Even a Rage 128 Pro would be a good choice.  Original PCI Mac Radeons are very hard to come by, though.  Almost impossible.  Wheras, Mac PCI Radeon 7000s are super plentiful, and super cheap.

Yes, I can see RUNE, Klingon Honor Guard, and some other games using the higher video ram...good call!!  As to the 7000 versus Radeon Mac Edition, I still would go with the original Radeon..too much of a performance hit with the 7000 for me.  I've read about the low 7000 performance in NUMEROUS benchmarks on many different sites so I decided on the Original one for my Blue & White G3.  As to their scarcity, that is true, but I found no problem getting one for $30 through the mac swap group and had offers from a few other people willing to sell so they are most certainly out there!

I would really be interested to see some tests between the Radeon Mac Edition and the Radeon 7000 running under 7.6..alas I don't have a single system that can boot 7.6 that has PCI slots so I can't do the test myself....bummer.

Maybe Dan will volunter to do it..yeah that's a good idea..get Dan to do it..he'll do anything..yeah that's it....

:)
