Monthly reminder for the Classic Macs FirstClass server. We have a permanent FirstClass server with over 180gb of files for classic Macs available for download. What is FirstClass? It's a GUI BBS for classic Macs from the 90's. Not a lot of them around anymore but this is the best way to get apps for classic Macs that can not access websites easily. Just download this one app and you get access to all the files in the repo using a GUI...

Join to get great files and make new friends. To join it put "macos.retro-os.live" as the server name and put "*" or "FirstClass" as the network name. To create a account, at first connect leave the account field blank and use the "connect" button and when asked if you want to create a account say "yes".

To get more detailed instructions on how to access the server go to https://macos.retro-os.live/index.php/firstclass/first-class-server-access and follow the steps...

If you want to contribute, the Classic Mac website is at https://macos.retro-os.live where you can give feedback on the service. We also have a discord for Classic Macs at https://discord.gg/VGefxXp2ds.

So, finally got some free evening ahead of me and wanting to try this out on my 8600 with System 7... only to discover all the info and stuff is hiding behind SSL. Ack! Any chance for a simple http only version for those of us on older machines wanting to access the info? If I got you right, the idea is to enable older machines to easily download stuff?

I anyway figured out I need a client and got FirstClass 3.5.1 from the Mac Garden. Then entered the macos.retro-os.live as the server name and put "FirstClass" as the network name.

It was greeted by a big form asking me tons of details :D ... my attempts to get around filling out this bureacratic monster resulted in an error "Person's name contains illegal characters"

Huh? What illegal characters could "Bolkonskij" contain?

Turns out that error rather indicates that not all required form fields have been filled out. I suspect this to be a client thing giving you limited choices on designing that form? Any chance on a nicer & more comprehensive form?

Now just connected and got the welcoming messages. Looking around the file archive, it looks a lot like the Macintosh Garden FTP with a GUI. Most of the files are from the Mac Garden, are they?

Given the Mac Garden is relatively backwards compatible and the upcoming macintosh.garden will offer support to even old 68k Macs and Netscape 3, I wonder how useful this will be to users?

I do love the sheer speed and looks of the First Class server. It'd just need a better mission than being a file mirror I feel.

There's still a lack for good retro compatible wallpapers in lower resolutions. Can't visit any of those JavaScript bloated and ad driven wallpaper pages from retro gear anymore.

Why not turn this exclusively into a place for beautification of all things Mac OS? A place preserving and storing all those wallpapers, Kaleidoscope themes and other visual enhancements for Mac OS and its programs? That'd be a unique place!

Another idea: Given any lawyers will hardly ever enter a First Class server these days, why not turn this into a ROM heaven? A First Class server loaded with classic ROMs and emulators that would run on Mac OS would be a cool thing to have. We just had 68040 and his quest to find Kickroms compatible with the UAE version for Mac OS the other day ...

Another idea might be a server that collects all classic and newer Mac literature like magazine scans, books and fanzines, presents those in a nice way and invites to stay and read stuff and learn something new. Something along a "reading corner" in one of those big brand bookstores :-)

I have a couple of more ideas for projects and I think there is really so much more one could do with a First Class server than just mirroring files. I'd be really happy to see something unique happening there! :-)

I agree! I also think that Hotline is a much better suited product for the cause, but I mean that in the best of intentions. Anything new to the scene is a welcome. As Bolkonskij mentioned, I think that you would draw more traffic to the server if it had more of a more specialized purpose.

Either way it's a good addition! :)

Wonderful addition! :)

Concur on the https issue although wouldn't that keep info on the website from being searchable? Or maybe it's having a request on the website asking not to be indexed like the Mac Garden I believe?

I agree hosting content that would be removed elsewhere would allow many things not accessible to be accessible again! :D

A real Mac haven, similar but more feature-rich than just a Hotline server! ;)

searchable might be a bit misleading but the self-proclaimed owner of the WWW, Google, says it won't index your website if you don't use SSL. But then it probably won't index and show your page anyway these days unless you're (at least locally) a brand.

There's always (!) the option to do it like the Macintosh Garden. Allow both! That way, everyone is happy and can connect.

The site is curated to be for 680x0 Macs running MacOS7.x. If you have a older Mac on other servers you have to sift through bunches of OS8+ or color-requiring Apps. You do have a point about the SSL - I will make that optional! The required fields are how FirstClass works - I don't personally use that data. So feel free to put whatever you like in those fields :)

I have no intention for it to be a general macos site like MG (or even MR). I am specific to the platforms above. Thanks for the feedback! Oh there are also conferences you can join and interact with other users as it is in fact a BBS...

edit: I checked the site and I already had SSL optional. Can you tell me where you were when it forced SSL? It should stick if you connect to http://macos.retro-os.live. If not, that's a issue I need to address...

edit 2: I updated the page http://macos.retro-os.live/index.php/firstclass/first-class-server-access to add a direct download link for the FC client so you should be able to download it without needing to navigate the download area if all you want is the client...
