Hello all,

What would I need to install to get System 7.1 to read a DOS-formatted Zip disk? 7.5 did it just fine, and I assumed it to be part of PC Exchange. But after installing PC Exchange on my machine running 7.1, it still says the disk is unreadable.

Thanks.

To be honest, I have no clue!

Usually, when I get to do this kind of things, I go through another (younger) mac that can read the files and copy them to the old mac.

Features you were familiar with in 7.5+ didn't make it into PC Exchange until those later Mac OS releases.

To fill that gap, in steps DOS Mounter 95 and the newer DOS Mounter 98. Both are downloadable from the Macintosh Garden.

DOS Mounter 95 works in Mac OSs from 6.0.7 and above. DOS Mounter 98 requires System 7.0 and later (up to Mac OS 8.5.1).

Either of these utilities can mount DOS formatted Zip drives Read/Write.

Media Supported
DOS Mounter 95 and 98
  • High-density floppies
  • SyQuest, Bernoulli, Zip & Jazz removable cartridges
  • Rewritable optical media (magneto-optical, phase-change and PD)
  • SCSI and IDE hard drives (DOS Mounter 98)
Both support Windows long file names -but truncate to the Finder's filename limitations if file names are over 31 characters in length.

Additional info: DOS Mounter 95 and DOS Mounter 98

Thanks, Knezzen. I guess I am a huge fan of DOS Mounter 95/98, especially  when used in Mac OSs made before 7.5.x.
