Let's say I've had an interesting conversation about this lately. Given that most e-mail providers shut out older computers and enforce SSL everything, our older Macs cannot be using e-mail without an intermediate like our SSL tunnel, even though they were technically well capable of the task. (after all, I knew a person using a Mac Plus for handling e-mail well into the late 90's.) Now, let's imagine there'd be an offering for an e-mail provider that allows for a small mailbox and the ability to connect to with virtually every e-mail client. Would you be interested in using it? |

Yes I'm more than happy to pay. maybe options web, email & FTP. i would pay £10/15 a month for that. Neal But i understand other countries may not have that much spare and it has to be cost effective.

I'd already be happy if I could STunnel to my provider. But many of them have eliminated this option, too, because they want you to use their proprietary apps to access your e-mail account. And I doubt you can revers that trend.

Still using my BT Internet mail with Netscape 4.8 ok, so no need for this. But interested as a back-up solution.

I can set one up - I have done similar for other classic projects like the Newton which also needs SSL-free connections.

What do you think about this? http://mail.retro-os.live/ Doesn't requite SSL/TLS or any other encryption (but supports them if you want them)

Good morning MarisaG and welcome to System7Today. It is nice to have people that like to roll up their sleeves and start working. I just use new email clients and wonder about how methods work to make current email systems work with the older clients. My email clients all use 2FA to access the account and from what I understand the email transport is end to end encrypted. I am curious as to how the System7Today email tunneling and your setup handles this. Most generally of course is the access and transport secure. Also since the email must pass through another server, is this new server secure. Are my emails ending up unencrypted on some server somewhere? Does the intermediate server store these emails? Well welcome once again. I look forward to reading and perhaps using your contributions.

I'd welcome it as well! ![]() Now, if it came ready to inject into AOL's Classic AIM software, which has a built-in email client, along with simple instant messaging for 68k Macs, well, that would be insanely great indeed! (I am adding my preference of course, to bring back to life a very fun way to use our old Macs ) I did add to my poll vote that I would most gladly send a meaningful contribution their way as well for something so retro-awesome! ![]() The understanding of course, is that it would be exactly that, a donation so it wouldn't be seen as making money off of the software, simply encouraging a revival of its former existence, if that makes sense?

@Wove - the problem with stunnel is that many big e-mail providers have switched to either 2 FA or app based authentication. So simply providing a user ID and password via SSL wouldn't suffice. For the later you need to use their API to request an authentication token for your specific app to be allowed to retrieve and send mail from your box. I found no way to get stunnel to do that, as I doubt it was ever designed with this in mind.

Just beware that the vintage encryption algorythms are unsafe by now for use over the Internet. And many old mail protocols didn't even bother to encrypt the access password to begin with.

It’s a tricky one. As much as I like the idea of responding to emails on my main mac address, the realities would probably be terrible. Not because it isn’t cool or even safe to do it but because i like many get 40+ emails a day and I doubt my little mac could actually download that many. So for me it would be a hobby email address for more limited use. Still it would be great to have. Would a vintage emailer need to strip out much of the content, pictures, video etc… to really work. So just text based. Not had chance to check it yet. I have a bit of hobby time tomorrow morning when the wife’s in town
