I imagine only a few people here may known Wanderer I - Cult of Misery. It's a 68k role-playing game developed by a single person back in late 1995 - exclusively for the Mac! It was heavily inspired by Ultima VI and offers a story about investigating the murder of the hero's sister. Just good 90's fantasy adventure stuff! I've been playing the game since the late 90's in a on/off fashion. It's frustratingly hard at (night) times :-) but then I keep getting back. It has a very nice Macintosh interface, the graphics are good and it runs fine even on a lowly Macintosh IIci. Why wasn't this more successful then? I have not the slightest idea! I just figure it came out during a bad time for Apple. The roman "I" after the title indicates that this was planned as a series which never materialized. Which, in turn, points to bad reception? I don't remember ever seeing a review of it in some publication. Luckily, I've recently run into the developer of the game and I'll ask all those questions and hopefully get definitive answers :-) Anyone else ever been playing Wanderer? Any question you'd ask the developer? Wanderer can be downloaded from the Mac Garden. |

While I like the color scheme I could never fathom the fascination some people had/have with TD adventure games. I just can't muster enough fantasy to envision anything "real" from such an abstract perspective. Give me a text adventure with some static graphics or a brainless "shoot-em-all-up" top-down view game - but don't try to mix the two together.

Heathen! Thou shalt not defy Ultima games! And this is comes closest to Ultima VI on the Mac! ![]() In fact, the dev told me Wanderer was inspired by Ultima VI (and its non-disappearance on the Mac) and that she had been a fan of the series ever since the Apple II days. She said she wrote Wanderer in Think C during her university days. Didn't have much time to balance / test it, which might explain the steep rise in difficulty at (in-game night) times :-D I asked her about the source code (would be great to have it open-sourced) and she says she probably has that one on self-burned disc. (yeah, 20 year old self-burned discs ... I almost fainted at the thought of data loss! ;-) ). Unfortunately she doesn't have a CD-ROM drive at hand to access the data right now. :-/

Quit your day job. Live on welfare. Brixton-style ftw! ;-) Good news, the developer agreed to look into preserving her games. She will release both of those games eventually when she gets around to locate the files. I really hope including the source code. Naturally I suggested the Macintosh Garden ... ;-)
