I recently picked up a copy of RamCharger 3.0 on eBay (shrinkwrapped in its original, partially crushed, box). I've read one or two reviews and writeups on this interesting piece of memory management software, but I've never made use of it myself. One of my Thanksgiving weekend projects is going to be getting this installed on my Powerbook running 7.6.1. Anyone have any experience with RamCharger? Any suggestions on testing this to best see its impact? |

n System 7 by default the memory allocated to an Application is a fixed amount you can set. Typically the default is determined by the author of the application, and is set large enough to allow the application to comfortably accomplish the task it is designed to accomplish. Often the default gives the application more RAM than is needed for smaller simpler tasks you may typically undertake. For instance an imager viewer's default might allow for opening 2MB images, while more typically you are looking at smaller GIF images for a web page. In this case the graphics viewer it tying up a good deal of RAM beyond what is required. RAM Charger changes memory allocation from the systems default fixed size to a dynamically allocated size based on what is actually needed and being used. MS Word asks for enought RAM to open a thesis, while it more commonly might just be used to create a cover letter for a resume. RAM Charger tries to make sure that MS Word is only using the RAM need to work with the document being opened and worked on. Meaning that RAM MS Word does not actually need is available for other applications to use. If Photoshop wants 3.5MB of RAM and Word wants 2MB of RAM, you will not be able to open both applications, however with RAM Charger dynamically allocating the RAM the Applications use, you might well be able to open both applications. RAM Charger has to be configured to be used. You know your workflow and know what you might like to add to it or where you have bottle necks in the flow. RAM Charger might be configured so as to give more memory resources to the applications in the work flow that are sluggish. Configuration might also be used to limit resources need to run secondary helpers in the work flow.

I have been using RAM charger for close to two years no on MacOS 8.1 While it works flawlessly for most apps, some get outright nasty when hooking them up. MacSSH and MacX beeing two of those. Luckily RAM Charger recognizes if an app keeps crashing under it and suggests on its own to blacklist that program. My advise: Test and and retest with any memory hoag that might benefit from it. Smaller apps shouldn't be bothered with this and if in doubt exclude.
